CLSS | Academic Coaching, Tutoring, and Writing

Summary of Job Duties:

Embedded Tutors support student learning in targeted courses and associated labs by sharing their expertise in course content, modelling effective learning strategies and review processes, and providing feedback to students. In addition, embedded tutors schedule weekly tutoring hours in the Student Success Center.

Applicants have the option to apply for Embedded Tutor positions focused on English Composition I (ENGL 1013) and/or College Algebra (MATH 1203). Tutors must work a minimum of ten hours per week throughout the semester on an established schedule. Tentative start for position is August 9, 2021, when selected candidates will begin online training comprised of both self-paced and scheduled sessions.

Working with Student Success Center Program Coordinators, the Embedded Tutor will be responsible for the following:
• Attending a section of targeted course and the associated lab;
• Working with students on course concepts and effective learning strategies in class, lab, and in tutoring sessions scheduled in the Student Success Center;
• Attending weekly team meetings and completing required training;
• Communicating regularly with the instructor about expectations, assignments, and student needs;
• Recording session notes and completing data entry using specified software.

Responsibilities Percentages:
50% Attending assigned course and lab meetings
30% Conducting tutoring sessions through Student Success Center
10% Attending weekly team meeting and completing training
5% Communicating with members of the embedded tutoring team and faculty
5% Completing session notes and data entry


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled undergraduate, full-time student with completion of twelve credit hours at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, prior to job start OR currently enrolled graduate student
  • Cumulative minimum GPA of 3.25
  • Ability to tutor targeted class, demonstrated through one of the following:
    • Earned grade of "A" in targeted course ENGL 1013 or MATH 1203
    • Equivalent course credit earned via transfer credit or ACT, SAT, ALEKS, AP or CLEP scores AND earned grade of "A" in upper level ENGL or MATH course completed at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Additional Minimum Qualifications (ENGL 1013 Only)
  • Excellent demonstrated writing skills (assessed via blind review of writing sample)

Applicable equivalencies may be considered on the above qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Completion of at least twenty-four on-campus credit hours at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville
  • Cumulative minimum GPA of 3.5
  • Minimum of one semester experience as a tutor, instructor, SI Leader, or Peer Mentor
  • Class schedule that allows target class attendance - see below for times

Additional Preferred Qualifications (ENGL 1013 Only)
  • Earned grade of "A" in ENGL 1023 or upper level ENGL course

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of targeted course concepts as demonstrated by course grade or equivalent credit
  • Knowledge of teaching, coaching, and/or mentoring best practices
  • Knowledge of video conferencing and email systems
  • Skilled in communicating and working with others
  • Skilled in personal academic planning and accountability
  • Skilled in conducting online and in-person sessions
  • Skilled in adapting to changing situations and troubleshooting issues as necessary
