Principal LINUX Systems Administrator


Job Description
Through research programs funded by science and technology R&D organizations within the U.S. Department of Defense, the research and development team in FAST Labs collaborate across the enterprise. On this team, you'll have the opportunity to support the development of advanced technology capabilities in the areas of cyber operations, autonomy, electronic warfare, and sensors and processing.

BAE Systems is looking for an experienced Linux Systems Administrator with network engineering skills to install, configure, and maintain air-gapped computer systems, peripheral equipment, and network devices in a lab environment. The qualified candidate will work in classified and unclassified environments with program staff and sponsors to ensure equipment and networks are properly configured and available to support experimentation. The candidate will also perform regular maintenance and operation of equipment as necessary (e.g., account creation, backups, failed hardware replacement, cabling, software and OS updates, STIGs, etc.). In addition, the candidate will assist users with routine troubleshooting of computer, peripheral, and network equipment issues not addressed by corporate IT services.

Tasks may include:
  • Perform systems administration activities on Linux servers and workstations (i.e., account creation and management, hardening, troubleshooting, OS and application installation, etc.)
  • Maintain and configure network devices and peripherals
  • Perform routine and emergency maintenance on computer, peripheral, and networking equipment (i.e., repair, backup, reconfiguring, re-cabling, etc.)
  • Perform system architecture and design tasks such as power, cooling and networking analysis
  • Perform inventory, configuration, and change management tasks
  • Develop system security plans including, security concepts of operation, risk management matrix, security control traceability matrix, security test procedures, and plan of action and milestones
  • Coordinate and/or perform vulnerability scans, static code scans and dynamic code scans to detect software vulnerabilities
  • Conduct and analyze vulnerability assessments to validate system compliance with DISA Security Technical Information Guidelines (STIGS)
  • Identify and implement vulnerability resolutions and/or mitigations
  • Conduct security test events to achieve accreditation milestones


Required Education, Experience, & Skills
Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, computer science, or technical discipline, and 8+ year(s) related experience or equivalent experience, training and/or certifications.

Required Skills:
  • System administration experience with Linux computer systems running RHEL7 and 8
  • Experience with typical RHEL admin and troubleshooting tools
  • Network configuration, administration, and maintenance experience
  • CompTIA Security+ certification or equivalent (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills


Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
Preferred Skills and Education:
  • ISC2 CISSP or equivalent certification
  • CompTIA Linux+ or equivalent certification
  • Windows system administration experience
  • Experience with other flavors of Linux (e.g., Ubuntu, Debian)
  • Experience installing and using Red Hat OpenShift
  • Experience installing and maintaining Sonatype Nexus, yum, FreeIPA, and Docker registries
  • Experience managing large, virtualized, networks and test beds
  • Ability to communicate effectively with higher level managers, functional managers, customers, industry partners, and teammates
  • A proactive attitude and the ability to be productive in a dynamic/collaborative environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively build and lead teams
  • Good mentoring skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Planning and organizational skills
  • US Citizenship and ability to be granted a security clearance by the Federal Government
