The Corporate Engineering (CE) organization is looking for an experienced and motivated individual to serve as Manager TCOE Projects . This opportunity is for someone who wants to positively impact the organization in a meaningful role that applies advanced engineering knowledge and experience, combined with a disciplined project management approach, to deliver business solutions that span across divisions and regions. A part of Global Engineering Services (GES), Corporate Engineering exists to support Abbott's businesses and help them drive sustainable growth and margin improvement. Corporate Engineering does this by planning, designing and deploying Facilities, Utilities Infrastructure projects with excellence, by means of strong talent, best practices, resourcefulness, and experience. The Technical Center of Excellence (TCOE) resides within the GES/CE organization and is responsible for the highest level of technical expertise and practices, in the areas of Facilities and Utilities, across architecture and engineering disciplines for Abbott globally. The GES/CE Manager TCOE Projects role significantly contributes to that mission by leading, overseeing and facilitating engineering activities across a broad set of responsibilities as outlined below.

Core Job Responsibilities:

The Manger TCOE Projects is an engineering professional who provides leadership for the organization pertaining Design Reviews and Projects/Portfolio Management for large capital projects in the areas of Facilities and Utilities. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Leadership and Oversight :
    • Responsible for stewardship and execution of the GES/CE Design Review Process, within the context of Abbott's Project Delivery Process and Lifecycle (FEL/FEP > Fund > Design > Build > C&Q), for large capital projects ($5MM - $300MM typical) in the areas of Facilities and Utilities, globally.
    • Also responsible for oversight of Project Engineering staff (including direct supervision), and corresponding portfolio focused on capital projects ($50K - $3MM typical) in the areas of Facilities and Utilities for the Lake County / Abbott Park facility.

  • Project Management : Identifies, plans, and conducts projects of various sizes/complexities within engineering specialty requiring custom, risk-managed execution plans, investigations, and/or equipment. Manages multiple, often concurrent, projects and meets deadlines. Maintains project controls and reporting for cost, scope and schedule; develops execution strategy including procurement. Understands the business needs and has a thorough knowledge of the client when developing a project scope. Works with the client and cross-functional stakeholders to establish scope, priorities, and schedules on multiple projects. Independently performs economic analysis and feasibility studies related to complex and often multiple competing project alternatives.

  • Technical / Design : Serves as expert and facilitator for the Design Review process. Benchmarks internally and externally. Independently executes, and/or directs others in the design of facilities/utilities infrastructure, equipment or systems, by applying novel and proven engineering concepts and techniques. Designs and performs detailed analysis. Communicates across functions and disciplines.

  • Organizational Interface : Close interface and coordination with GES/CE Project Management Office (PMO) and Lake County/Abbott Park Site Operations. Represents the organization as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects. Interacts with both senior management and external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations. Conveys information effectively through formal and informal means, e.g. develops proposals, design review summaries, and project updates. Submits articles for internal or external publication.

  • Compliance : Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional policies, procedures, and standards for Quality, Environmental, Health, Safety and Energy (EHS&E) Global Policies, Abbott Engineering Standards (AES), and other governance areas as applicable. Ensures quality and effectiveness of key results of major projects and mitigates risks through sound design, early risk assessments, and implementation of fallback strategies.

  • Additional Responsibilities May Include : Develops and maintains standards, procedures, guidelines and job aids for efficient, effective and sustainable processes. Participates in internal, cross-divisional teams to develop and align procedures and standards. Supports Abbott Engineering Standards (AES) committee(s) with regular meetings, periodic document reviews and approvals, and other subject matter expertise. Directs the efforts of others such as engineers, technicians and outside resources. Resolves problems and crisis situations requiring fast, astute decisions with rapid implementation by utilizing technical training and experience. Provides training. Represents engineering on corporate and division initiatives.

  • B.S. degree in engineering is required.
  • M.S. degree in engineering or related discipline is desired but not required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of engineering experience, with at least a portion of that experience in the design and deployment of facilities/utilities systems .
