Research Associate III

Responsibilities

The Semel Institute for Neuroscience and
Human Behavior is seeking to hire a full-time Research Associate III to assist with
sleep research. Primary duties include:
  • Participate in Actiwatch recording of sleep states, Dreem device based
    recording of EEG and EMG parameters and measurement and quantification of
    environmental temperature and other weather conditions and their impact on
    human sleep and human thermoregulation
  • Administer drugs to mice and rats at appropriate doses and measure their
    response; conduct histological analyses
  • Prepare electrodes and implant them in mice and rats to better understand
    hypocretin cell activity
  • Conduct quantitative analyses of brain histology using MicroBrightField and
    Zeiss microscopes and associated software
  • Assist in writing up and presenting results for publication
  • Order lab equipment and supplies as needed

This is a limited position with eligibility to convert to career.
Qualifications
  • A strong understanding in sleep research and
    neuroscience
  • Experience recording electroencephalograms in animals
  • Experience in immunohistochemistry and quantitative microscopy
  • Skill in implanting mice and rats for sleep recording and in scoring sleep
    waking states and quantifying power spectra, muscle tone and other relevant
    variables
  • Ability and experience in writing up results for publications
  • Knowledge in conducting statistical analyses using standard statistical
    packages such as Systat
