Staff Engineer, Packaging Development

Job Location: Hershey, PA

Job Summary:

Working independently or as part of a project team, the position is responsible for leading and executing the planning, research, development, testing and documentation required to implement highly-effective packaging solutions for new and existing products. The position is expected to investigate multiple options and assess corresponding benefits, drawbacks, and risks of each and provide a recommended best technical and business solution. The position requires proactive leadership behaviors to identify and implement cost improvement ideas aimed at enhancing packaging structure, manufacturing processes, and business processes. The position is expected to have a working knowledge of Hershey's packaging specification and bill of materials management system and other supporting systems for successful packaging implementation. The position skill-set requires consistent demonstration and a proven track record to manage projects of complex and ambiguous nature, foster strong cross-functional collaboration and communication, identify and understand broader scope implications, adaptability and creative problem solving to break through barriers, relentless critical thinking, use of data analytics to drive decision making, defines Critical-To-Function performance attributes which drive reliability, and the ability to clearly present technical and strategic information to senior level management.

The position is expected to provide technical mentorship and strong personal leadership within the Packaging Organization as well as foster synergies and partnerships with key packaging stakeholders such as Packaging Systems Engineering, Packaging Procurement, and Packaging Quality. The position is expected to clearly and consistently demonstrate Global Leadership Behaviors at the Leading Others level.

Role Responsibilities:
  • Product & Packaging Innovation/Commercialization
    • Manages brands and supports projects of complex and/or ambiguous nature requiring a high level of skills and experiences (ie. molded packaging, new technology and/or business development, large capital investments, etc.)
    • Provides broad view insight and direction to identify strategic packaging or process opportunities with keen awareness of risks and barriers
    • Leads and executes the planning, research, development, testing, and documentation required to implement highly-effective packaging solutions for innovative, new, and existing products
    • Uses advanced tools, concepts, and methods to evaluate and prove-out multiple packaging options; assesses corresponding benefits, drawbacks, and risks of each; and provides a recommended best technical and business solution
    • Champions the optimal packaging solution and prepares supporting business case documents and analytics to ensure flawless execution
  • Cost Improvement/Quality/Performance/Sustainability
    • Relentlessly challenges the status quo (suppliers, technology, process) to identify and drive packaging cost, quality, performance, and sustainability optimization
    • Routinely benchmarks and monitors trends and technology to apply best demonstrated practices which drive cost, quality, performance, and sustainability improvements
    • Designs and conducts data generating tests and implements quality and performance optimization via data analytics and robust performance specification development
  • Technical Leadership

    • Leads Technical Reviews (ie. projects, technology, supplier capabilities) by identifying content, setting agendas, facilitating meetings, and documenting outcomes/learning.
    • Fosters Critical Thinking and Crowd Sourcing to solicit feedback and generate ideas in pursuit of robust packaging design and performance.
    • Leads and drives Root Cause Analysis initiatives using advanced knowledge of materials, equipment, process, and people to arrive at data supported solutions.
    • Designs robust experiments which provide effective data and learning to inform business and technical direction which minimizes risk and leads to optimal packaging design
    • Provides sound technical direction to project teams which enables Hershey to evaluate viable alternatives and seek strategic advantages (cost, quality, performance, etc.)
    • Effectively evaluates, communicates and builds enterprise-wide consensus for complex or groundbreaking packaging concepts.
  • Business Process
    • Leads problem investigation of an often ambiguous nature and identifies and develops innovative solutions to address opportunities.
    • Provides thought leadership on cross-functional teams, projects, and initiatives to identify opportunities and drive business process improvements.
    • Leads and fosters full incorporation of new processes and procedures into the Packaging Organization.
    • Assists Team Manager in gathering input from Engineers in support of weekly Project Reviews and assigning resources in Project Management System.
  • Mentoring and Coaching
    • Serves as a thought leader on Hershey Packaging Development Team and shares business expertise to mentor departmental staff and internal customers.
    • Provides interactive, constructive feedback for continued personal and professional development of junior Engineers/Technicians
    • Provides mentoring and coaching to assist and guide other Engineers to solve complex problems and enhance the Packaging Organization's Bench Strength.
    • Assists Group Manager in assessing and building team skillsets and business acumen to grow team effectiveness.
    • Leads the on-boarding activities and training for Interns and new Engineers

  • BS in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or any related science field.
  • Minimum 8 - 10 years in packaging development, or combined packaging/related experience.

    • Extensive knowledge of manufacturing and assembly processes including how packaging design changes impact processes, lead-times, resource requirements and development costs.
    • Proven track record which demonstrates an extensive knowledge of packaging engineering principles and packaging material fundamentals, such as the following:
      • Design experiments and test plans that lead to thorough and conclusive results
      • Gather data and provide analytics which drive clear and robust decision making

      • Design of Experiments and Analytics (Green Belt/Black Belt tools)

      • Well rounded working technical knowledge and experience with materials and converting processes of paper, corrugated, flexible packaging, semi-rigid and rigid molded plastic, metal substrates and associated pack-types
