Job Description

Times Opinion Audio is hiring a host for a new weekly podcast. Each episode will delve into a single story rooted in an opinion, typically drawn from a central character's personal experience: imagine the personal guest essay but in audio. Some episodes will feature highly produced documentaries that immerse listeners in an unfolding story and others will center a host interview. We are looking for a host to help anchor and frame the stories with compelling writing, an engaging presence, and excellent editorial judgment. The ideal candidate is creative, curious, and not afraid to take risks.

Who you are:

You are someone who wants to be a central part of the team when it comes to developing story ideas, writing scripts, shaping episode structure, and pushing new and provocative ideas. You are passionate about narrative journalism, you enjoy the challenge of working on ambitious new projects, and you're comfortable in a start-up environment. You are also comfortable engaging with a wide range of topics and with people who have diverse points of view and experiences.

Responsibilities:
  • Host weekly episodes of a narrative podcast, plus occasional special episodes or series.
  • Help plan episodes from initial pitch to production to final edit, in coordination with production team
  • Prep for episodes, including reading background material and drafting lines of inquiry and questions, in coordination with production team
  • Write episode tops to help the audience understand what's coming and why they should listen.
  • Prep for interviews
  • Interview guests and contributors
  • Workshop new formats and segments, in collaboration with production team
  • Edit and record scripts
  • Edit and re-record narration as needed
  • Provide notes on episode drafts
  • Write columns for Opinion desk that speak to the podcast, as appropriate
  • Promote the episodes of fellow hosts in the Times Audio network


Qualifications:
  • At least eight years experience in journalism or professional writing.
  • Ability to draw out compelling stories through interviewing.
  • Experience in engaging in a wide range of topics as a journalist or writer.
  • A passion for narrative storytelling.
  • Sound news judgment
  • Experience in building complex narratives in audio or print.
  • Well-developed and adaptive cultural competence and emotional intelligence.
  • Experience in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Eagerness to create the best work possible
  • Believes in The New York Times' mission and is dedicated to being a part of our innovation and growth
  • Able to uphold the existing editorial standards of The Times
