Staff Scientist III - Military HIV Research Program

HJF is seeking a Staff Scientist III to support theMilitary HIV Research Program (MHRP) located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR)in Silver Spring, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to MHRP.

Leads the development and execution of research projects focusing on viral genetics and evolution. Supervises projects and investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems. Develops new technologies and protocols that allow to sequence HIV-1 in plasma samples and in different cell subsets. Samples from clinical trials will be used to evaluate the effect of different interventions on the viral reservoir.

Responsibilities:
  1. Demonstrates cross-disciplinary knowledge, leadership, and communication. Designs and implements experimental protocol. (30%)
  2. Trains and supervises technical staff and other scientists. Coordinates with other technical and professional staff. (20%)
  3. Collects, processes, and interprets experimental data. Assess strengths and weaknesses of work. (20%)
  4. Prepares publication-ready manuscripts. Finalizes reports and reviews for submission to scientific journals and patent applications. (10%)
  5. Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards. (10%)
  6. Coordinates and prepares new grant and funding applications. (10%)
  7. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Expert level in Single Genome Sequencing (SGS) and assays to characterize the HIV-1 reservoir such as CARD-SGS and MDA-SGS. Strong background in HIV-1 sequencing technologies and HIV-1 sequence analysis.

Minimum Education:Doctoral degree required for this position. Expertise in specific laboratory assays (Single Genome and/or reservoir Sequencing) prioritized. Related experience in a laboratory setting pre or post PhD will be considered.

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements:Minimum of 8-10 years of experience required for this position.

Supervisory Responsibilities:Direct authority to make decisions on the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, starting salaries and merit increases; conduct employee performance evaluations and directs work activities.

Background/Security: Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
