As part of Amgen's Process Development organization, MCS continuously strives to be a leader in delivering superior, high quality manufacturing processes and commercially successful product presentations. The MCS organization is responsible for delivery of clinical and commercial products, process knowledge and technology solutions to advance Amgen's product portfolio and manufacturing strategy.

As part of the Manufacturing and Clinical Supply team, the successful candidate, under minimal direction, will be responsible for managing all aspects of key initiatives and projects across multiple business functions in support of our Operational Excellence program. This role will lead a team that enables business areas/plants to reduce waste by improving efficiencies, improving productivity, and reducing rework and waste through the use and application of Continuous Improvement tools, techniques, and methodologies.

The OE lead will provide strategic direction to the Leadership Team as well as to functional Continuous Improvement representatives as it relates to Industrial Engineering and Operational Excellence. The OE Lead will have in-depth knowledge of Continuous Improvement tools, techniques, and methodologies and practical experience applying/ training/ coaching them to improve the performance of processes, people, and systems.

This position interacts with multiple levels of the organization. Candidate must have strong leadership skills, communication skills, and the ability to approach issues from a strategic perspective. This includes the ability to translate strategy into challenging, actionable objectives to effectively drive your team, advocate client positions throughout the life cycle of the project and make value-based decisions. The OE lead will also interface with internal and external OE/IE and Lean networks and industry groups.

Key Responsibilities include:
  • Lead MCS Operational Excellence and Productivity programs
  • Responsible for direction, management, planning and administration of Industrial Engineering/ Operational Excellence resources to ensure all customer requirements are met.
  • Manage and support execution of high-priority process improvement initiatives and projects.
  • Deliver high quality and timely results through the use of appropriate lean methodologies and tools and other key domain expertise.
  • Support the implementation of Operations Operational Excellence programs e.g. Lean Transformation (Stability thru Integration), Lean Business Systems, Productivity framework, Human Performance, etc.
  • Represent MCS on the Operational Excellence and Productivity network.
  • Provide mentorship to CI practitioners and educate key functional area leadership.
  • Deliver/co-ordinate training on Continuous Improvement tools, techniques, and methodologies to staff and leaders.
  • Perform analysis in collaboration with leaders to identify opportunities for improvement and make recommendations.

Basic Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree & 2 years of directly related experience OR
  • Master's degree & 6 years of directly related experience OR
  • Bachelor's degree or & 8 years of directly related experience OR
  • Associate degree & 10 years of directly related experience
    OR
  • High school diploma / GED & 12 years of directly related experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree (Science, Engineering, MBA) & 5 years of directly related experience in pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries
  • 5 years of experience in Industrial Engineering and/or Operational Excellence related roles
  • 2+ years of direct supervisory experience in a manufacturing or similar environment

Competencies / Skills:
  • Can manage multiple responsibilities, priorities and tasks with minimal direction
  • Expert on key LEAN Manufacturing tools and approaches
  • Experience directly implementing Continuous Improvement methodologies such as Six Sigma, DMAIC, and /or Lean Manufacturing
  • Proven project management skills and leadership and demonstrated ability to execute and manage complex projects and programs
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Financial acumen
  • Ability to resolve conflicts

  • Experience with regulated environments (i.e. cGMP, OSHA, EPA) required
