Climate Newsletter Writer and Reporter

Job Description

The Climate Desk at the New York Times is looking for a creative and collaborative writer to anchor its Climate Fwd: newsletter and cover climate news. Candidates should have a track record of ambitious and rigorous reporting that has shaped the conversation on climate and advanced readers' understanding of it.

Applicants should be well-versed in current research and policy, and well-sourced in the climate community of researchers, policymakers, analysts and lawyers. Candidates should have a vision for expanding the NYT Climate newsletter community, engaging readers and synthesizing news and analysis in a conversational and newsletter-friendly voice.

Candidates should have a body of work that shows broad intellectual curiosity, a sharp eye for recognizing overstatement, and a command of complex and varied topics. Candidates should be able to show how they have landed scoops and owned a beat, written razor-sharp explainers and constructed gripping long-form narratives.

The ability to work as part of a team with visual reporters - photographers, videographers and data visualizers - is essential. That teamwork has led to the kinds of inventive visual and data-driven journalism that the Times's Climate Desk has pioneered. Collegiality and collaboration are highly valued. Candidates should also be willing to travel for reporting.
