WHAT YOU'LL DO:

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The manager owill play a pivotal role in helping formulate, execute and sustain a global communications strategy for Abbott's nutrition business in the United States and Canada, focusing on our nutrition portfolio-which includes the Similac, Pedialyte and PediaSure, Ensure, Glucerna and a number of other brands. The manager or senior manager, based at the company's U.S. location in Columbus, OH, is responsible for planning, creative content development, identification and execution of storytelling opportunities and engaging with traditional and new media to enhance Abbott's reputation and drive thought leadership for key initiatives through the nutrition business. The manager or senior manager must think strategically and provide thoughtful counsel to a broad range of internal contacts across all levels of management and seek out and build relationships with external stakeholders. The candidate will bring a deep understanding of the media landscape, external best practice and have a track record of success in media relations, storytelling, social engagement and program management. Experience with consumer products is required as this person will play a critical role in translating complex topics into consumer-relevant stories.

CORE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Enhance Abbott's global nutrition reputation across multiple external constituencies and spotlight the Company and its leaders through proactive media relations.
  • Proactively think through and develop plans for driving awareness, consideration and reputation across Abbott's U.S. nutrition business through through significant visibility platforms and earned media.
  • Identify and create compelling thought leadership opportunities and storylines for key initiatives in nutrition, which resonate with target media, stakeholders and consumers.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with media and key stakeholders through thoughtful, strategic engagement.
  • Oversee PR agency teams that assist with planning and execution.
  • Identify trends and insights via social media and other tools to leverage for storytelling opportunities.
  • Serve as a key liaison with Corporate Public Affairs to provide content as needed for corporate channels.
  • Interface with various division and corporate teams, including R&D, government affairs, investor relations, legal, finance, marketing, regulatory, medical, clinical and senior management.
  • Train company spokespeople/business experts and coach third-party spokespeople on delivery of messages.
  • Support in development and execution of executive thought leadership and communications campaign for senior leaders of the Nutrition business including Executive Vice President.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITY/SCOPE:

The manager or senior manager reports to the Director, Public Affairs, U.S. and Canada Nutrition, who leads strategic communications efforts for Abbott's U.S. nutrition business. All division PA functions have a line reporting relationship to Corporate Public Affairs. This position works with a broad range of internal and external constituencies across all levels of management and functions at both the corporate and division level, including R&D, marketing, legal, regulatory affairs, operations, quality, HR, government affairs, investor relations and finance. The manager/senior manager also maintains budget responsibility for PR programming within their scope of work at the division level.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE, YOU'LL BRING

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree required in journalism, public relations, communications, business, marketing or related field. Advanced degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE / TRAINING REQUIRED:
  • More than 10 years of experience in media relations, with a deep understanding of how to use/leverage external communications and relationships to enhance reputation in the U.S. Experience working within an editorial environment.
  • Proven writing, verbal and problem-solving skills and demonstrated success in developing and executing communications that impact reputation. Previous PR experience/responsibilities include: translating complicated topics into consumer-friendly stories, media strategy/relationships, social media and PR program development, external advocacy.
  • Demonstrated experience in creation and deployment of successful thought leadership campaigns to meet strategic business objectives is required.
  • Strong critical thinking skills; ability to synthesize complex information, apply learnings, build business plans and work in matrix environment are required competencies.
  • Experience working with senior management. Ability to influence and build relationships and trust with internal clients, media and other key stakeholders.
  • Experience overseeing PR agencies and leading cross-functional workgroups.
  • At ease in a fast-paced operating environment with numerous, sometimes competing priorities.
  • Comfortable with high-profile/celebrity spokespeople
  • Experience counseling clients, offering strategic counsel and pushing back on recommendations when necessary.
  • Positive, can-do attitude and willingness to do whatever it takes to get the job done
