About This Role

As the Director, R&D Portfolio Governance in the Strategy, Portfolio, Operations, and Communications (SPOC) team, you will report directly into the Senior Director, Portfolio Leadership & Governance and are accountable for designing, implementing, managing, and continuously improving the R&D portfolio governance model (the portfolio decision-making forums), inclusive of stage gate and business investment/workforce decisions, from discovery through commercialization). In this position you will collaborate and work closely with a broad range of functions to ensure the governance model and processes are well understood and enable efficient and effective decisions for study and programs within the context of the overall R&D portfolio and Biogen strategy.This is a high visibility position both within and external to R&D with significant exposure to senior leadership.

What You’ll Do
  • Manage the R&D Portfolio Governance Operating Model including operating model strategy, forum execution and operations, continuous improvement initiates, and management of governance team resources.
  • Lead the design, management, and execution of all R&D Portfolio Governance Committees in line with charters and ensure committee conduct and output is tied to R&D strategy and mission.
  • Drive crisp, high quality decision making within all Governance Committees by ensuring decision makers are provided with the right information, at the right time, at the right level of detail, with clear recommendations.
  • Build consensus across committee members on all forum processes and behavior/conduct.
  • Develop and continually monitor impact-based and value-based metrics to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of Committee decision-making.
  • Spearheadongoing assessment and evaluation of the governance operating model, resulting in recommendation for modifications.Champion and drive continuous improvement initiatives to ensure ongoing maturity of the Governance Model in alignment with the evolution of R&D and Biogen.
  • Maintain a standard approach to documenting decisions for all Governance Committees and responsible for ensuring all study, program, and portfolio decisions are communicated effectively and timely with dissemination to the appropriate audiences. Partner closely with R&D Communications to ensure effective pull through of the decisions to the broader organization.
  • Ensure appropriate management of all Governance archives and documents, including team presentations and submissions, committee feedback, committee decisions, and portfolio prioritization.
  • In partnership with the SPOC Strategy Business Operations team, develop centralized and standardized program and portfolio analytics to enable workforce and investment tradeoff decisions.

Required Skills
  • Seasoned professional with an advanced scientific degree or MBA and 10+ years of experience in biopharmaceutical industry with solid understanding of the drug development life cycle from research through commercialization.
  • Demonstrated success working in a highly cross-functional environment and brings a healthy balance of strategic thinking, problem-solving orientation and action.
  • Proven ability to effectively and confidently influence, collaborate, and communicate (verbally and through presentation) with a variety of stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Experience collaborating with senior leaders to support portfolio decision making or managing portfolio prioritization and driving portfolio tradeoff discussions and decisions on investment priorities and proposals
  • Hands-on project manager adept at establishing processes, creatively solving problems, facilitating cross-functional working teams, and managing through ambiguity and complexity.
  • Proven experiences in recruiting, developing and managing people and tangible contributions to creating a high performing and engaged team

Preferred Experience
  • Prior consulting experience preferred.
  • Prior facilitation among executives and senior leaders preferred.
