Staff Chaplain - Spiritual Care Services, Part-Time Days (0.50 FTE)

A Brief Overview
Responsible for responding to needs of patients, family members and staff, designated in consultation with the Director, Spiritual Care Services and functions as a member of the Spiritual Care Service staff. Coordinate all services to a specific in-patient unit(s) or groups; serving as chaplain on assigned patient unit(s); and participate as staff for the Spiritual Care Service in care conferences for such units. Provide spiritual care assessment, intervention and support for patients and their families.

What you will do
  • Provides interfaith spiritual assessment and intervention which enables patients, family members, visitors, and staff to draw upon their own religious and spiritual resources.
  • Serves as staff person on and coordinates care with multi-disciplinary teams for designated patient units and groups.
  • Internal and external teaching and outreach on spiritual care topics.
  • Performs special pastoral/spiritual services (baptisms, memorials, etc) requested of the Spiritual Care Service and as appropriate to his/her professional functioning.
  • Coordinates care with Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) students and volunteers.
  • Serves as clinical mentor to CPE students and Spiritual Care volunteers, and, as time permits, medical and genetics counseling students.
  • Participates in research activities undertaken by Spiritual Care Service.
  • Participates as an alternate in the on-call rotation, when needed.
  • Serves as a liaison to area congregations as requested.
  • In addition, Chaplains perform specialized duties specific to their particular role, such as: serving on specialized committees, performing particular religious functions/services, and/or coordinating volunteers.
  • Duties may vary based on defined specialties as follows:
  • CANCER CARE:
  • Responsible for coordinating inpatient care with Palliative Medicine Team.
  • Serves on Palliative Medicine team for outpatient care.
  • Participates in Cancer Center committees as appropriate.
  • Serves as back-up to Decedent Care Chaplain as needed.
  • CATHOLIC/INTERFAITH:
  • Coordinates all services to a specific religious group at SHC (Catholic). Provides supportive pastoral care and Sacraments to Catholic patients, family caregivers and staff regardless of race, sex, national origin, marital status, protected veteran status, gender identity or sexual orientation.
  • Serves as resources for Catholic volunteers.
  • May be responsible for picking up Blessed Sacrament from local parish as required.
  • DECEDENT CARE:
  • Designs and implements all bereavement services.
  • Coordinates bereavement care records, including Disposition of Remains, Chain of Custody forms, and draft Death Certificates, with other SHC departments.
  • Provides bereavement education and training through workshops, forums, and preparation and distribution of appropriate written materials.
  • Coordinates efforts with the Autopsy and Pathology Departments, requests with the organ procurement organization, area mortuaries, and county and state health departments.
  • Responsible for transmitting patient records to Coroner's office, when requested as directed by federal and state legal regulations.
  • PALLIATIVE CARE/VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR:
  • Serves as member of both the Palliative Medicine team and the Spiritual Care Service team.
  • Participates in Palliative Care committees as appropriate.
  • Coordinates the Spiritual Care Service Volunteer program. Duties include:
  • Directs volunteers, including recruiting, training, staffing the Volunteer Coordinating Committee, and monitoring the ongoing quality of the program
  • Provides staff supervision for volunteer coordinators for all faiths.
  • Organizes volunteer trainings and updates volunteer manual or policies, with assistance from other staff and volunteers.
  • Ensures volunteer compliance with hospital required background checks, health clearance and Healthstream.
  • Provides metrics relating to volunteer program as needed.

Education Qualifications
  • Master's degree or graduate certificate in work-related discipline required.
  • Graduation from a seminary or school of theology that approved by a professional chaplain certifying organization.

Experience Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of directly related work experience.
  • Completion of four (4) Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE).
  • CANCER CARE:
    Experience working with oncology and/or palliative care patients.
  • CATHOLIC/INTERFAITH:
    Three (3) years' experience, paid or unpaid, as an ordained Catholic priest in good standing.
    Two (2) years previous experience training and supervising Eucharistic Ministers.
  • PALLIATIVE CARE/VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR:
    Experience working with palliative care patients.
    One (1) year experience directing a volunteer program or directing more than 100 individual volunteers.

  • Ability and stamina to minister to patients/residents/clients with varying physical and mental dysfunctions.
  • Ability to adjust communications to fit the needs and level of understanding of the receiver.
