A Brief Overview
Neuropsychologists are licensed clinical psychologists with special expertise in the applied science of brainbehavior relationships, which they use to assess, diagnose, treat and rehabilitate patients across the lifespan with neurological, medical, neurodevelopmental, psychiatric, and other cognitive and learning disorders. The Neuropsychologist uses psychological, neurological, cognitive, behavioral, and physiological principles, techniques and tests to evaluate patients' neurocognitive, behavioral, and emotional strengths and weaknesses and their relationship to normal and abnormal central nervous system functioning. The Neuropsychologist uses this information and information provided by other medical / healthcare providers / collateral contacts to identify and diagnose neurobehavioral disorders, and plan and implement intervention strategies. A Neuropsychologist's typical caseload may include people with traumatic brain injury (TBI), cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) such as stroke and aneurysm ruptures, brain tumors, encephalitis, epilepsy/seizure disorders, Parkinson's Disease, dementias, and mental illnesses (e.g., schizophrenia.) Neuropsychologists also assess people with a wide range of developmental disorders, including attentiondeficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disabilities, and Asperger's Disease. Neuropsychologists differ from other psychologists in their ability to accurately assess cognitive deficits, and to manage, treat and rehabilitate brain-injured and neurocognitively-impaired patients. They have specialized knowledge of the brain, and an understanding of such areas as: neuroanatomy, neurobiology, psychopharmacology, neurological and medical illness or injury, as well as the use and interpretation of neuropsychological tests.

What you will do
  • Assists individuals and families receiving services in understanding the patient's needs and limitations and how to manage them.
  • Coordinates care with physicians and other health-care providers to provide optimal care.
  • Determines cognitive capacity for independent living and return to work or school.
  • Facilitates and helps direct rehabilitation. Performs periodic formal assessments at various stages in the rehabilitation process.
  • Identifies psychological factors such as depression, anxiety, personality traits, and thought disorders that contribute to cognitive dysfunction. Identifies other factors such as fatigue, pain, somatization, substance abuse or secondary gain that may impact the neuropsychological evaluation.
  • Participates in teaching of fellows, residents and students and in investigational research as time permits.
  • Performs neuropsychological and psychological evaluations of non-neuroscience patients such as transplant,
  • rehab, chronic pain, psychiatry, etc.
  • Performs neuropsychological and psychological evaluations to determine the presence, nature, and severity of cognitive and/or psychiatric dysfunction.
  • Performs neuropsychological evaluations of neurological and neurosurgical patients, with an emphasis on traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, dementia, Moyamoya Disease, and Parkinson's.
  • Provides baseline information for longitudinal follow-up.
  • Provides diagnostic information needed prior to neurosurgical procedures particularly for epilepsy and Parkinson's patients. If necessary. provides brief counseling for anxiety reduction in pre-surgery patients.
  • Provides training to, and clinical oversight of Psychometricians conducting neuropsychological and psychological tests.
  • Provides treatment recommendations for cognitive disorders and psychological adjustment.
  • Responds to patient/family concerns in a supportive and sensitive manner and takes immediate action to ensure high customer satisfaction.

Education Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in Psychology with a specialization in Neuropsychology from an accredited university
  • Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) degree with a specialization in Neuropsychology from an accredited university.

Experience Qualifications
  • An internship (or its equivalent) in a clinically relevant area of professional psychology AND two (2) years of fellowship (or its equivalent) with an emphasis in clinical neuropsychology and two (2) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience years of progressively responsible directly related work experience

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to administer, score, and interpret psychological and neuropsychological tests
  • Ability to apply psychological principles, theories, methods and techniques in the delivery of professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional psychology and behavioral health
  • Ability to prepare written reports that summarize patient assessments / evaluations and recommendations for treatment
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply advanced psychological theories and techniques to the full range of patient populations
  • Knowledge of current assessment procedures of cognitive, neuropsychological, academic, personality and social-emotional functioning to provide diagnostic/treatment recommendations
