Video Producer

Job Description

The New York Times Video Unit is seeking a video producer to work closely with the newsroom's live team on the weekends, Wednesday through Sunday.

The producer will help the video desk stay on top of the news of the day -- producing everything from standalone news clips to short-form videos. They will be responsible for setting up and monitoring live video feeds, and work in collaboration with the desks across the newsroom to identify, verify, edit and publish video material on-site. This role will require working with the newsroom's Live desk, and our ideal candidate is eager to innovate, with the goal of showing our audience what's happening as it's happening. Experience working in video or broadcast news is essential, and experience at a digital news outlet with photo, graphics or design is an asset. The role will also require flexibility in publishing video material for non-linear formats and off-platform or social stories.

This video producer will work collaboratively with the broader team and will exercise sound journalistic judgment to produce top-notch visual news coverage, while also working with more senior staff members to contribute to the development and reporting as news unfolds. The producer must thrive under the pressure of newsroom deadlines and have a track record of juggling multiple projects at any given time.

Collaboration and collegiality are a must. Above all, we are looking for someone who works well in a team environment.

The Role:
  • Searching, selecting and prioritizing video clips and packages in line with The Times's daily report.
  • Scripting and/or editing short-form news video packages
  • Utilizing news wire services such as AP and Reuters to acquire material.
  • Setting up and monitoring live feeds
  • Adding text and graphics to live feeds as needed
  • Coordination with individual media sources to verify and acquire UGC
  • Quick-turn video clipping, branding, packaging and exporting (using Adobe Premiere Pro).
  • Writing surrounding copy for video assets (titles, summaries, tags).
  • Publishing videos in The Times's CMS.
  • Monitoring the news day across core areas of coverage.
  • Researching and production assistance for politics and enterprise stories.


Requirements:
  • 3+ years of journalism experience (preferably in a digital video or broadcast newsroom).
  • Must be able to edit quickly and accurately with Adobe Premiere Pro.
  • Must have strong writing and researching skills.
  • Must be able to make quick decisions under intense deadlines in a high-pressure newsroom setting.
  • Must have strong editorial news judgment and a passion for breaking news.
  • Must be well-versed in the world of social and digital media, with a keen eye on what competitors are doing and what new tools are being used.
  • Willingness to work evenings and on weekends.
  • Collaborative team player with a positive attitude.
  • Thorough knowledge of current events, U.S. politics and foreign policy.
