Embedded Software Architect - Heart Failure Therapy Atlanta, GA

As Embedded Software Architect, you will be part of our Heart Failure product development team focused on planning, executing, and delivering embedded software applications developed for heart failure devices meeting both short term and long-term LIFE SUSTAINING needs of our patients. Located in either our Atlanta, GA or our Plymouth, MN sites, you will provide technical leadership for the software team and be a technical representative for the software team as we execute cross-functional projects that meet customers' needs in terms of functionalities, performance, time, and cost.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with cross functional teams to understand the embedded software's role in the success of current and future projects.
  • Contribute to all phases of product development including project definition/scoping, planning, architecture, design and implementation.
  • Provide leadership to drive technical alignment between the embedded software team and other sub-teams (Firmware Application, DevOps, Electrical Engineering, System Engineering, Software Verification, and Manufacturing).
  • Support requirements and risk management engineers in defining product and software requirements including requirements that address patient-facing risks.
  • Coordinate with cybersecurity teams to complete threat modeling, cybersecurity risk assessment, cybersecurity requirements, and deployment processes as Secure Design lifecycle.
  • Define and document embedded software architectures that enable developers to deliver software that meets business and project needs while also being extensible to support the across Product Portfolio.
  • Provide guidance in day to day technical design, development, and unit testing of embedded software. This includes mentoring developers on architectural concepts and ensuring that the software is developed according to the architecture.
  • Support design reviews and code reviews by performing thorough assessments and delivering meaningful feedback.
  • Leverage your software expertise to mentor software developers, guiding them through challenging development tasks and helping them to grow their skills.
  • Routinely assess software technologies, tools, and techniques with the goal of bringing improvements back to the software team.
  • Participate in recruiting/interviewing process, helping Abbott to identify highly qualified candidates as our team grows.
  • Comply with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments.
  • Maintain positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities, on occasion, as assigned.


Experience and Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in CS, EE, or related field.
  • Experience with architecting embedded medical devices for RTOS and/or Embedded Linux systems.
  • Ability to capture and analyze internal and external customer's needs, to understand design and solution towards solutions.
  • Ability to communicate technical solutions and issues clearly and adequately to management as well as members on the project.
  • 8+ years of development experience using C/C++ for embedded devices.
  • Experience with documenting software architectures and designs including UML diagrams.
  • Experience with multi-tasking systems and real-time application development (ex. threading, semaphores, mutexes, processes, etc.).
  • Experience with low-level real time system development, such as interrupts, micro controllers and device drivers.
  • Strong understanding of source control including branching/merging and managing releases.
  • Experience with unit and integration level testing including automated testing tools.
  • Experience analyzing and debugging embedded system using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers and other debugging techniques.
  • Experience in working in an iterative (Scrum, Kanban) development process.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in related field (education may substitute for some years of experience)
  • Experience in implanted medical devices
  • Ability to lead and manage a team from multiple sites to work cohesively.
  • Ability to identify initiatives for process improvement.
  • Experience in additional programming languages such as C, C++, and Python.
  • Knowledge of hardware breadboards and PC hardware system interfaces and embedded systems.
  • Experience with cybersecurity for embedded devices (threat modeling/CSRA or digital signing preferred)
  • Experience with BLE 5.0 a plus
