HJF is seeking a Scientist I to support the Experimental Sciences Division within the Enteric Diseases Department at the Naval Medical Research Center to provide scientific support to the Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Division of the Experimental Sciences Branch. U.S. citizenship required.

The Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Division performs research performs research and leads development of diarrheal prophylactic and countermeasures to serve as tools for combatting antimicrobial resistant enteric infections, as well as supports a number of research areas under evaluation. As a member of the Experimental Sciences Division, the incumbent will work collaboratively with the principal investigators (Frederic Poly and Yang Liu) to develop, conduct and manage research projects targeting preventative interventions like vaccines and immunoprophylactic products. The scientist will investigate the feasibility of applying a wide variety of microbiological scientific principles and concepts to products under development.

NOTE: As a U.S. Government contractor, all HJF employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by December 8, 2021. Proof of vaccination or an approved religious or medical accommodation will be required.

Major duties and responsibilities include:
  • PCR, sequencing, cloning, purification of recombinant proteins.
  • Production, isolation and characterization of capsular polysaccharides from Campylobacter jejuni.
  • Conjugation of capsules to protein carriers, and characterization of the conjugates.

Working in a multidisciplinary team and matrixed environment is essential.

Responsibilities:
  1. Designs, develops, executes, and implements scientific research and/or development. Processes and interprets experimental data. Formulates experimental hypotheses and designs experimental protocols. (25%)
  2. Performs specialized laboratory research utilizing experimental protocols which involves specialized procedures that includes isolation and characterization of capsular polysaccharides from Campylobacter jejuni, conjugation of capsules to protein carriers, cloning, expression, purification, and characterization of carrier proteins, evaluation of functionality of anti-diarrheal prophylactics and countermeasures. Skills include use of HPLC, FPLC, immunoblotting, ELISAs, conjugation chemistry, bacterial genetics and molecular biology. (25%)
  3. Collects and handles samples and maintains detailed records of experiments. Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories and logbooks. Analyzes and interprets data. Performs data entry for research projects and maintains databases. Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards. (20%)
  4. Coordinates and contributes to new grant and funding applications. (10%)
  5. Interacts and communicates with colleagues and collaborators. Trains and supervises laboratory technicians, as needed. (10%)
  6. Prepares written reports and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals. Writes technical reports, summaries and protocols. (10%)

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  1. Strong scientific fundamentals and analytical background. Technical knowledge of bacterial pathogens.
  2. Training and experience with BSL-2 techniques is desired.
  3. Experience with standard data analysis tools (Excel, GraphPad Prism) and the quantitative background to advance this knowledge on the job is expected.
  4. Demonstrates ability to independently design and execute project planning, trouble shooting and validation of experiments.
  5. Excellent oral, written communication and interpersonal skills are required. Effectively communicates performance goals and expectations.
  6. Ability to work independently and in a team environment with potential supervision of lower-level staff.
  7. A degree of creativity and latitude is expected including the ability to multitask on multiple projects in a dynamic environment.

Minimum Education:Doctoral degree in molecular biology, microbiology, or biochemistry required.

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements:Minimum of 2-5 years of experience required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.

Work Arrangement:100% on-site.

Background/Security: U.S. citizenship required; eligible to obtain and maintain a Tier III Investigation/ Secret Clearance.
