About This Role

This position will focus on development of high productivity and robust cell culture processes through classically and statistically designed experiments involving multiple CHO cell lines producing a variety of novel or biosimilar therapeutics including but not limited to monoclonal antibodies, fusion proteins and other complex biologics. These activities can include clone screening, early and late stage scale-up process optimization, robustness studies and process characterization.

A major component of the role involves independently designing, conducting, and documenting laboratory bioreactor experiments with a focus on process definition and understanding. The role also represents Cell Culture Development (CCD) at cross-functional meetings and may also lead key department initiatives or upstream process development projects. The right candidate will also contribute to technology innovation projects that utilize multi-omics tools to gain deeper understanding of biological processes, development/optimization of continuous manufacturing and evaluation of alternative hosts for low cost protein production. A self-driven candidate will advance Biogen’s culture of continued scientific innovation by proposing and executing novel ideas to solve complex problems. This role reports to a cell culture team leader.

  • Plan, perform and document experiments at bench-scale (shake flasks, AMBR, 3L reactors, etc.) to support development of mammalian cell culture processes for recombinant protein production.
  • Perform data analysis on experimental results and design future experimental studies with minimal supervision.
  • Represent CCD while working collaboratively with team members across cross-functional teams to ensure lab experiments are well-planned and executed.
  • Perform troubleshooting of experiments and lab equipment.
  • Document development work in concise reports and provide project updates via oral presentations
  • Support lab maintenance tasks, lab harmonization and workflow optimizations and new technology evaluations thru innovation projects and present findings in form of scientific publications and at external conferences.
  • Be a strong team player and has an ability to collaborate effectively on complex projects
  • Act as a mentor to fellow colleagues and junior staff.

Required Skills
  • B.S. with 4+ years of relevant experience in Bio/Chemical Engineering or related life science field of experience
  • M.S. with 2+ years of relevant experience in Bio/Chemical Engineering or related life science field of experience
  • Proven record of successfully planning and executing projects and experiments
  • Knowledge and technical experience in mammalian cell culture/ biotechnology related development including aseptic operations, cell biology, biochemistry, analytical techniques, and bioreactor operations
  • Familiarity working with complex laboratory operations, instrumentation and control systems
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency and creativity in developing innovative technologies/approaches in cell culture

Preferred Skills
  • Proficiency in big data analysis using Python/R, JMP, Matlab or other commercial software
