About This Role

Biogen is accelerating gene therapies that may one day help transform the way we treat neurological diseases. Biogen's Gene Therapy Department is searching for a technical leader focused on developing and implementing large-scale plasmid production processes within the Pilot team. You will evaluate and implement new technologies and support the technical transfer of plasmid production processes into Biogen’s manufacturing facilities. There will be the opportunity for you to participate in the development of scalable viral vector processes as needed to support Biogen’s AAV-based Gene Therapy pipeline.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead operations of a small team in the pilot-scale plasmid production lab to ensure supply of critical plasmid raw materials to support Gene Therapy development activities.
  • Provide scientific mentoring to their peers and potential direct reports.
  • Lead technical projects to ensure milestones and timelines are met.
  • Openly communicate across functions and departments while maintaining good collaborative relationships.
  • Work collaboratively within the Gene Therapy pilot team to develop scalable purification processes to support Biogen’s GT programs.
  • Engage in internal collaborations with other groups to achieve objectives and implement scientific advancements in the Gene Therapy field.
  • Provide technical expertise on topics pertaining to plasmid production and AAV purification development.
  • Present findings and/or results to senior management, external stakeholders, and industry peers at conferences.
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement new technologies to streamline process development activities and advance Biogen’s plasmid and AAV production processes

Who You Are

You will effectively support Biogen’s Gene Therapy pipeline and development activities through effective operational planning and execution. You will drive technology innovation and implementation internally and help provide oversight of multiple projects as a subject matter expert.You will have opportunities to represent the Gene Therapy pilot team on program specific multifunctional technical development teams

Qualifications

Required Skills

Scientist I:
  • BSin chemical engineering, chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or other related sciencewith relevant industrial experience in Biopharmaceutical development with 6+ years experience
  • MSin chemical engineering, chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or other related sciencewith relevant industrial experience in Biopharmaceutical development with 4+ years experience
  • Ph.D.in chemical engineering, chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or other related sciencewith relevant industrial experience in Biopharmaceutical development with 0-2 years experience


  • Expertise in purification/downstreamtechnologies, including chromatography and filtration
  • Proven track record of publications and presentations

Scientist II:
  • BSin chemical engineering, chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or other related science with relevant industrial experience in Biopharmaceutical development with 8+ years experience
  • MS in chemical engineering, chemistry, biology, biochemistryor other related sciencewith relevant industrial experience in Biopharmaceutical development with 6+ years experience
  • Ph.D. in chemical engineering, chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or other related science with relevant industrial experience in Biopharmaceutical development with2+ years experience


  • Experience managing and developing direct reports
  • Experience managing production lab operations
  • Experience in purification process development
  • Expertise in purification technologies, including chromatography and filtration
  • Proven track record of publications and presentations

Preferred Skills
  • Experience in purification process development
  • Experience with tech transfer of development processes into manufacturing
  • Experience with large-scale purification of plasmid DNA
  • Experience with purification of AAV or other viral vectors
