ENGINEER ELECTRICAL 5

Job Description

Specific Job Description

The primary purpose of this position is to be the technical project lead for the electrical construction, testing, commissioning and initial operation of the 13,800 V electric plant onboard CVN 78. This shall include the development of a qualified workforce to perform the task and oversee interfaces to developmental GFE systems such as the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) and the Dual Band Radar (DBR) systems. This position will also ensure developed capabilities are valuable to other high voltage systems either in existence (CVN 68 class) or in design (Ohio Replacement Program (ORP) and wind turbine design). The position requires familiarity with the multiple standards, analyses and specifications used in the design. The testing methods used to determine if the system has been constructed properly will require experience with various technologies not currently present within the shipboard electrical power community. The position will also require a detailed understanding of the operational scenarios for which the design is constructed to ensure limiting events are properly studied during commissioning. This will require comparing acquired results to multiple Engineering Analyses performed during the design process. Properly reacting to conditions that present themselves during the commissioning phase of the design will require experience with medium voltage hardware of this generation and system modeling and analysis as well as an understanding of propulsion plant and electric plant dynamics. The position ensures a coherent, complete and successful implementation of the design. Success is defined first by acceptance by the customer of the delivered 13,800 V electric plant. Later primary events will include acceptance by the customer of the interface to EMALS and DBR (i.e. proper interface between large complex energy storage and delivery systems that are new designs for the platform).
