Principal Financial Analyst - Acquisitions

Primary Role

  • Serve as a member of an elite team of trusted advisors to business development teams across American Water to provide strategic and financial guidance as well as be a catalyst for achieving consensus on high visibility business decisions
  • Lead vital financial modeling and due diligence efforts in evaluating the largest and most complex new acquisition targets and investment opportunities in advancement of American Water's growth objectives in the regulated and market-based businesses
  • Effectively present analysis to state and executive level management to guide strategic decision making


Key Accountabilities

  • Prepare, create, and own moderate to complex financial evaluation models of new acquisition and investment opportunities
  • Perform detailed financial analysis such as scenario and sensitivity analysis, customer rate impacts, debt defeasance costs, tax calculations, and other related analysis as applicable
  • Ensure alignment of acquisitions with internal investment guidelines and highlight financial deal risk factors
  • Create and present reports in support of analysis to credibly deliver results of findings to state leadership, executive management, and Commercial Development Committee, as necessary
  • Serve as a liaison across the American Water enterprise to develop strategic acquisitions by helping to shape, structure, and market new opportunities
  • Collaborate with various levels of management across different functional departments such as State and Corporate Business Development Teams, Rates Teams, Operations, Engineering, Legal, Accounting, Operational Finance, etc. to develop and document modeling assumptions


Key Accountabilities Continued

  • Support regulatory filings and data requests related to acquisitions during acquisition and general rate case filings
  • Work in a dynamic team under minimal supervision; independently handle presentations and/or work efforts with senior or executive management
  • Mentor junior staff members and/or rotational staff to aid in their development by evaluating quality of work, financial analysis, and presentation content.
  • Review peer (operational finance) and/or junior staff members' work products and assist in highlighting key insights in analyses
  • Drive 'best practices' and 'continuous improvement mindset' by assessing and measuring the on-going effectiveness and efficiency of Acquisitions team systems and tools
  • Special projects and ad hoc analysis as required.


Knowledge/Skills

Detailed and demonstrated knowledge of:
  • Financial modeling using valuation methodologies including Discounted Cash Flows, Net Present Value, Internal Rate of Return and Cost of Capital
  • Economic principles relating to utility ratemaking preferred
  • US GAAP accounting principles
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills as well as comfort with ambiguity
  • Methodologies and practices of data collection and research
  • Advance / expert level in MS Excel
  • Additional Microsoft Office Suite programs (MS Word, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to identify and drive the need for and develop new financial analysis requirements, models, improvements, and efficiencies
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal
  • Ability to analyze detail, see larger picture, and guide strategy
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to work under competing deadlines and time constraints
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex financial analysis to business leaders


Experience/Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or closely related field
  • MBA or Masters in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA or other technical license/designation preferred
  • Seven or more years of pertinent financial experience required. Utility industry experience a plus
