Associate Financial Analyst, Acquisitions

Primary Role

Motivated self-starter to support the creation and completion of standard and moderately complex financial models, analyses, and due diligence for acquisition and investment opportunities. Collaborate alongside a team of trusted advisors to provide strategic and financial guidance in advancement of American Water's growth in the regulated and market-based businesses

Key Accountabilities

  • Prepare financial analysis of early-stage acquisition opportunities
  • Assist with the preparation of financial evaluations of small to medium sized acquisition and investment opportunities using abbreviated and standardized models
  • Work in tandem with cross functional groups across the business including state and corporate business development, operations, engineering, legal, rates, etc. to develop and document the assumptions to use with each evaluation
  • Work with a dynamic team to produce and effectively communicate and present results of financial analysis to state and executive leadership
  • Research acquisition opportunities, including information from regulatory bodies, governmental entities and debt offerings.
  • Prepare analysis of key industry competitors and deal metrics
  • Support regulatory filings and data requests related to acquisition transactions.
  • Participate in and support Commercial Development Committee, as necessary
  • Analytical support, financial analysis, ad-hoc analysis, and special projects as required.


  • Valuation methodologies including Discounted Cash Flows, Net Present Value, Internal Rate of Return and Cost of Capital
  • Economic principals relating to utility rates preferred
  • US GAAP accounting principals
  • Methodologies and practices of data collection and research methodologies
  • Strong time and project management skills
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and immediate deadlines
  • Advance / expert level in MS Excel
  • Additional Microsoft Office Suite programs (MS Word, PowerPoint)


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or closely related field.
  • MBA or Masters in Accounting or Finance a plus
  • CPA or other technical license/designation preferred.
  • One to three years of accounting/financial related experience. Utility industry experience a plus.
