Tooling Engineer Intern (FRL Devices)

Summary

The Applied Material and Tooling Development Team at Facebook Reality Labs is seeking a Tooling Engineer Intern to support tooling & process development by playing a role in research and execution of future products while collaborating with Product Design, Manufacturing, and Industrial Design.
Our internships are twelve (12) to sixteen (16) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

Required Skills

  • Support the development of new plastic injection mold tooling to meet design and research milestones to support future product
  • Collaborate with Product and Industrial Designers to improve the manufacturing feasibility of plastic components
  • Collaborate with Tooling Suppliers in the design, manufacturing and qualification of world class tooling, as well as supporting molding process development
  • Collaborate with our cross functional team in the selection of materials to meet performance, dimensional and cosmetic requirements
  • Willingness to learn a wide range of molding techniques including insert molding, 2 shot molding, metal injection molding, die casting, transfer molding, liquid silicon molding and thermoforming
  • Travel to overseas or domestic vendor sites to help drive tool and part optimization


Minimum Qualification

  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a Bachelors or Masters in Engineering (Plastics, Materials, Mechanical, Process)
  • Experience with 3D CAD design software, FEA and mold filling simulation software
  • Understanding of SPC, DOE, GD&T principles
  • Experience with a variety of commodity and engineering grade thermoplastic and thermoset resins
  • Experience with post molding operations including but not limited to CNC machining, plastic coatings, ultra-sonic welding, silk screening and heat staking
  • Demonstrated experience in the use of Excel/Google Sheets and PowerPoint/Google Slides for project tracking and presentations to clearly communicate program status and current progress
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment


Preferred Qualification

  • Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship/co-op
