WGL - Fixed Asset Accountant

Job Description

Reviews, analyzes, and records property accounting transactions in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) standards

You will:
  • Performs monthly closing activities, including journal entries and reconciliations, and prepares supporting documentation.
  • Provides and coordinates responses to inquiries by senior accountants or department manager. In some instances contact with others outside the department (i.e. other business units and/or departments, external consultants, regulators, and auditors) may be required for this position.
  • Performs and documents control activities, ensuring that they are performed in accordance with all applicable policies and procedures.
  • Performs monthly due diligence analysis and presents findings in monthly due diligence meetings.
  • Prepare journal entries, reconciliations, closing process outputs, filings and other deliverables.
  • Reviews and makes recommendations for new guidelines and procedures to determine the financial impact of new accounting methodologies on the Company.
  • Develops methodologies and maintains data used for depreciation studies, rate cases and regulatory filings.
  • Reviews existing processes, identifies opportunities for improvement and helps to implement approved changes.

Must have:
  • Bachelor's Degree business administration, finance, accounting, or related field
  • 3+ Years accounting experience
  • Demonstrated comprehensive working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Demonstrated ability to logically analyze and interpret data and to identify relevant issues in solving narrowly defined business problems.
  • Proven ability to meet numerous internal and external deadlines often under tight time constraints.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully influence/persuade both verbally and in written form to achieve desired business outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to establish rapport and effective working relationships with business partners, supervisors and peers.
  • Proven ability to use computer software and applications, including Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Access, to share, retrieve, research and present business information.

Prefer to have:
  • 0-2 Years experience in audit, technical accounting and/or financial reporting
  • Experience researching complex accounting issues and drafting written conclusions
  • CPA eligibility and/or Big 4 experience
  • Demonstrated ability to logically and concisely document and present complex issues to diverse audiences at all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of accounting systems such as PeopleSoft
