Job Description

The New York Times is looking for a Program Manager to join its Digital Tech Program Management Organization to work with Research & Design. This role will frequently interact with various departments including advertising and the newsroom.

As a program manager, you will organize and drive the execution of a variety of projects of different complexities in parallel.

We Count On You To Provide:
  • Program delivery excellence: Has a comprehensive understanding of their portfolio and those it integrates with, and is able to educate others
  • Project Leadership: Work closely with other functional areas, departments and external agencies to manage projects from launch through completion. Mediate to bring clarity to priority, scope and timeline expectations. Motivate and maintain a healthy alignment across multiple project teams.
  • Visibility: Ensure shared understanding of holistic goals and success criteria across all project teams. Promote a free flow of information with and among partners and team members on all matters.
  • Collaboration and Teamwork: Build trust with other functional areas, departments and external agencies to move efforts forward with little to no escalation required. From time-to-time, you may employ some agile frameworks or tools to drive efforts forward.
  • Communication: Transparency - Track and communicate program level level metrics inclusive of all key risks, and emergent issues that are readily accessible and current. Manage portfolio communications for key stakeholders as needed.
  • Continuous Improvement - Detect systemic issues, process problems, and other risks and work with the appropriate colleagues to find resolutions.
  • Impediment Removal: Ensure all risks and dependencies are identified and handled swiftly, and that key decisions are communicated appropriately


After a month on the job, you:
  • Have gained basic familiarity with The Times and our mission-based organizational structure
  • Have met with and are establishing relationships with your core partners and teammates.
  • Have met with and are developing a sense of understanding and empathy for your partners.
  • Have your 1 minute pitch of your primary initiatives down. You're able to describe their value and how they contribute to the broader organization.
  • Are actively running at least 1 project.
  • Have some ideas about how to further align R&D with XFun PMO practices and processes, where there is value.


After three months on the job, you:
  • Will share program updates with minimal to no guidance required
  • Will be a lead and authority for your portfolio space - building forecasts, partner management
  • Will be leading planning efforts within the parameters defined by the organization
  • Have established some norms to continuously build relationships with R&D partners
  • Have a plan, with a prioritized approach and buy-in from stakeholders to align R&D with XFun PMO practices and processes, where there is value.


There is no or minimal travel expected for this role. This role is NYC-based.

Who you are
  • You have 3+ years experience in program management running diverse software development projects.
  • You can relay strategies, goals, and project status to both technical and non-technical partners.
  • You have demonstrated experience working in both Agile and waterfall methodologies.
  • You love learning and are passionate about being a team player.
  • You are technically fluent - you understand the basic concepts behind networking, cloud computing, 5G, blockchain, etc. You do not need an engineering background, but need to be comfortable being in regular conversations with technical teammates.
  • Exhibit knowledge of Jira, or other equivalent project management / task management tooling.
  • You're passionate about the mission of The New York Times and show a commitment to be part of our innovation and growth.


Nice to have
  • You have experience in multiple roles on a software development team.
