Our location in Columbus, OH currently has an opportunity for a Microbiology Laboratory Supervisor.

The Microbiology Department within Abbott Nutrition's R&D (Global Analytical and Food Safety) is responsible for conducting microbiological analysis of R&D project samples.

The Microbiology Laboratory Supervisor reports directly to the Director of R&D Microbiology. The individual in this position requires a high level of independence and prioritization skills to assess resource fluctuation.

The Microbiology Laboratory Supervisor is highly technical and administrative role in nature and includes management, implementation, and maintenance of the microbiology laboratory. The supervisor is responsible for reviewing, monitoring, trending and communicating results from testing of ingredients, in-process samples, finished products, and environmental monitoring samples. Additionally, the supervisor supports product research and development inquiries as well as commercial quality investigations. The supervisor is expected to be the laboratory's technical resource in regard to product research and development and serve as a liaison between various organizational areas. The laboratory supervisor is to uphold the quality system and maintain audit readiness as well as document review and pursue continuous improvement of the laboratory.


Major Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system.
  • Assures that all lab testing is performed according to established requirements and that all results are compared to specific standards.
  • Strives for improved efficiency and effectiveness of testing procedures
  • Interfaces with other areas of research and development
  • Reviews non-conformances that impact the lab and provides recommendations and corrective action.
  • Provides leadership to assure that all employees receive necessary training and direction to effectively execute their individual duties and responsibilities.
  • Makes timely and sound decisions regarding product disposition, corrections, method suitability, personnel issues, etc.
  • Manages human resources in the lab, including employee development, employee counseling, hiring, firing, etc.

Minimum Education/Professional Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology/Microbiology or a related field.
  • Three years knowledge of food processing techniques, laboratory procedures and documentation requirements, and statistical applications
  • This position must have good technical background and effective communication skills
  • Understanding of feasibility to scale up to commercialization of products
  • Must be capable of trouble shooting problems that arise with these methods on an immediate basis, to avoid extensive production delay and risk.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and written to various areas of the organization
