Job Description

The New York Times is looking for a Senior Product Designer to join the Publishing group. Our mission is to empower our newsroom and help shape our best, most innovative journalism by building tools to create and promote journalism on our core news products.

Working with our team, you will steer the design and development of Ink, our Publishing tools scalable design system. Ink is a young system and you'll grow it to support current needs and help define our vision for Ink's future. You'll deliver core components, layouts, navigation, interactions, and strategies for accessibility and performance. You'll help develop the definitions and usage rules that guide the system and help iterate the governance model that allows other teams to test and iterate into Ink. You'll partner with other orgs on opportunities for our various design systems to support each other. You'll also help us grow our Platform and Foundations team's core capabilities including tools permissions and search.

Responsibilities
  • Report to the Executive Product Design Director of Publishing on a growing team with unique user, design, and technical considerations across a suite of tools and underlying services that power them.
  • Help guide product strategy and tactics for Ink through Design, balancing short-term and long-term newsroom, reader and company needs.
  • Use Design methods to lead workshops and guide decision-making.
  • Create high-fidelity prototypes that accurately articulate interaction design solutions.
  • Partner with your team to create and maintain a governance model for Ink and onboard people across disciplines into how to use Ink.
  • Work with Product Design, Product Management, Engineering, Editorial, Data and Research partners
  • Identify user research needs
  • Create production-ready design deliverables and partner with Engineers to ensure high-quality, performant experiences. Sweat the details.


Basic Qualifications
  • Dedication to The New York Times mission of seeking the truth and helping people understand the world.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in Figma, Sketch, or equivalent design tools.
  • Proficiency in Adobe XD, Origami, Framer, Figma or equivalent prototyping tools
  • Track record of using qualitative and quantitative data to develop and iterate products.
  • A portfolio of work that showcases your process and a range of fidelity levels in addition to finished design work. Applications without portfolios will not be considered.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency in developing and iterating performant, accessible and scalable design systems for web, mobile web, iOS and Android.
  • Proficiency in developing data-driven, coded prototypes in React or equivalent languages
  • Simplify and bring people along.
