Job Description

The New York Times is looking for a Senior Product Designer to lead discovery and execution for our Community strategy at The New York Times.

Your primary focus will be running a discovery process with your cross-functional team that imagines a bold, broad community strategy that includes but goes beyond our existing commenting platform. Together with your teammates, you'll develop a vision that points to research-informed features for deepening connection between subscribers and the journalists of the New York Times. Once established, you'll execute upon that roadmap in 2022.

The ideal candidate brings a comfort facilitating discovery, an understanding of how to partner with research colleagues to identify reader needs and drive design strategy and a prototyping and interaction design skill set that allows you to confidently guide readers from moment to moment of their experience.

About your product team: You'll join the Audience team which is composed of engineers, product and program managers, researchers, newsroom partners and a principal designer with an expertise in visual, brand and interaction design. The team drives a broad range of user experiences across multiple channels: engaging qualified audiences on Search and Social and, once on-platform (website and apps), leveraging our community platform to forge a deeper sense of connection between readers and our journalism. The team is currently implementing foundational upgrades that will bolster both our commenting platform and tools and ultimately give you and your team the capabilities needed to innovate upon our community experience.

  • Critical thinking & communication: Formulate compelling design strategies informed by research and data that address reader, business and newsroom goals.
  • Research and prototyping: Identify user research needs and create design artifacts and prototypes for testing.
  • Facilitation and discovery: Develop user journeys, user flows, experience maps, principles, and frameworks to facilitate group workshops and decision making.
  • Execution and iteration: Create production-ready design deliverables, and pair with engineers to assure high-quality visual and user experiences.

Basic Qualifications
  • Dedication to The New York Times mission of seeking the truth and helping people understand the world through.
  • Committed to learning and improving new skills and processes.
  • Enthusiasm for giving and receiving honest, thoughtful feedback.
  • Capable of making and communicating design decisions.
  • 5+ years experience designing digital products, with recent experience leading design projects on multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency in Figma, Sketch, or equivalent design tools.
  • A portfolio of work that showcases your process and a range of fidelity levels in addition to finished design work. Applications without portfolios will not be considered.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent visual, user experience, and typographic sensibility.
  • Experience creating a compelling case for your designs using quantitative data and qualitative insights.
  • You've iterated on designs based on usage patterns and user feedback.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, and other designers.

Return to office

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The New York Times is currently remote-only. This Senior Product Design role will be a remote position until further notice. Later this Fall, we will be expected to return to our Manhattan office in a hybrid capacity - spending at least half of the week working in person.
