Primary Role

This position is responsible for assisting in the management of day to day operations for NJDEP Office of Quality Assurance certified drinking water laboratory and will act as laboratory quality assurance/quality control officer. This includes reporting process control results to plant production person and regulatory compliance samples to NJDEP under the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Key Accountabilities

  • Oversees daily laboratory operations and ensures adherence to laboratory Standard Operating Procedures
  • Notifies plant personnel and water quality department on problems and issues relating to water quality standards
  • Assists local, state and federal regulatory agencies during laboratory inspections
  • Responds to certain water quality issues during business hours but may require specialized analysis during off hours
  • Maintain service contracts, calibrations for certain equipment and ensure laboratory equipment is kept in good working order
  • Order and maintain laboratory supplies
  • Assures that policies, programs, standards of performance and approvedobjectives related to water quality are adhered to.
  • Assists with training of plant operating staff, field services and otherwater quality personnel in treatment practices and environmentalinitiatives.
  • Supports water quality activities related to the EnvironmentalManagement Program to ensure compliance with SDWA/CWA regulations arecontinually met.
  • Plan, prepare and control the portion of the financial plan related toarea of responsibility.
  • Conduct special projects and prepare reports.


  • Strong working knowledge of laboratory instrumentation including Ion Chromatography, Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry,
  • Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption, Total Organic Carbon by Persulfate/UV, Cyanotoxins by ELISA, Gas Chromatography for VOCs
  • Strong working knowledge of microbiological analysis including Total Coliforms, E. Coli, Fecal Coliform, Heterotrophic Plate Count
  • Strong working knowledge of water treatment processes
  • Strong working knowledge of Federal and State Safe Drinking Water Act requirements
  • Strong working knowledge of New Jersey Environmental Laboratory Certification program (NJAC 7:18)


  • Minimum of Bachelor's Degree with major in Biology, Chemistry, LifeSciences, Environmental Science or equivalent other environmental area(Microbiology, Environmental Engineering).
  • 5 years experience in water, and/or wastewater laboratory operations. Laboratory Management experience preferred

Travel Requirements

  • Periodic travel in the US up to 15%, intrastate travel up to 30%.

  • T1 Water treatment license preferred but not required
