We're looking for a Principal Machine Learning Engineer to design new data infrastructures and using that infrastructure to deploy machine learning solutions. In this role, your primary role will be to evangelize, influence and implement the technology strategy for the teams. You will focus on the biggest problems repeated across the org and construct solutions utilizing reusable components, patterns, tools. You will Influence the team behaviors through active mentorship, design & code reviews. Additional responsibility is to support machine learning efforts, including tools design, pipeline maintenance and upgrades, as well identifying current and future bottlenecks of the system.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to telecommute* from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Experience in large production environments in configuring VM's and expertise in Continuous integration tools like Jenkins for End to End automation for all build and deployments
  • All phases of software development life cycle (SDLC), which includes User Interaction, Business Analysis/Modeling, Design/Architecture, Development, Implementation, Integration, Documentation, Testing, and Deployment
  • Prototype-to-production development of software. Care about improving training performance by researching into latest algorithms. Value scaling inferences by utilizing CPU/GPU resources in parallelized fashion and have a strong foundation in data structures and optimization algorithms
  • Some knowledge implementing batch processing solution of large volume of data by using Spark or similar framework
  • Knowledgeable in machine learning algorithms (Random Forest, Naive Bayes, KNN etc).
  • You have some knowledge in modern deep learning techniques via packages such as Keras/Tensorflow
  • Understand software engineering fundamentals: version control systems (i.e. Git, Github), DevOps tools, CI/CD implementation and workflows, and ability to write production-ready code
  • Participating in the engineering life-cycle, including designing high-quality ML infrastructure and data pipelines, writing production code, conducting code reviews, and working alongside our infrastructure and reliability teams
  • Fluent in at least one programming language (e.g. Python, Scala, Java) and are comfortable developing code within a team environment (e.g. Github, testing, code reviews)
  • Leverages Docker and creates new images from Docker Hub deploying them to applications.

  • Demonstrated creative and critical thinking with an innate drive to improve how things work
  • Design and create environments for data scientists to build models and manipulate data
  • Define the deployment approach and infrastructure for models and be responsible for ensuring that businesses can use the models we develop
  • Partner with data scientists to ensure solution deployable at scale, in harmony with existing business systems and pipelines, and such that the solution can be maintained throughout its life cycle
  • Manage our cloud (Azure) infrastructure, Azure storage accounts and deploying workloads on Azure virtual machines (VMs), virtual networks, cloud services, resource groups, express route, traffic manager, VPN, load balancing, application gateways, auto-scaling and cloud services
  • Create operational testing strategies, validate, and test the model in QA, and ensure the quality of the delivered product

Required Qualifications:
  • Graduate (Masters/PhD) degree in Computer Engineering, MIS or STEM disciplines
  • 7+ years of experience as a Machine Learning Engineer, Software Engineer or Data Engineer
  • 7+ years of experience in software design, architecture and development and data analysis
  • 5+ years of experience Python, Scala or Java
  • 5+ years of experience in Database Design, Creation and Management of Schemas, writing Stored Procedures, Functions, DDL, DML SQL queries
  • 5+ years of experience working with three or more of the following: continuous integration/continuous delivery tools, REST API development, microservices architecture, serverless architecture, containerization, and public/private cloud
  • 4+ years of experience on Hadoop working environment includes Spark, HDFS, HBase, Impala, Zookeeper, Oozie, Hive, Sqoop, Pig, Cassandra, Kafka and Flume
  • 3+ years of experience with containerization and clustering technologies like Docker, OpenShift and Kubernetes
  • Experience working with Azure, Databricks or GCP
  • Experience in implementing a production ready, load balanced, highly available, fault tolerant, auto scaling Kubernetes Infrastructure and Microservice Container Orchestration

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's or other advanced degree in data science or a related field
  • Experience deploying data science models in a production setting
  • Experience working with and productionizing machine learning algorithms (SVM, Random Forest, Naive Bayes, KNN, etc.)
  • Experience building robust data pipelines using a variety of data sources, programming languages, and toolsets
  • Experience in all phases of software development life cycle (SDLC), which includes User Interaction, Business Analysis/Modeling, Design/Architecture, Development, Implementation, Integration, Documentation, Testing, and Deployment
  • Hands-on experience with one or more ecosystem technologies (e.g., HBase, Impala, Solr, Kudu, Streamsets, NiFi, ElasticSearch, Databricks, Snowflake, AWS/Azure/GCP)
  • Experience working with Data Science/Machine Learning software and libraries such as TensorFlow, Keras, scikit-learn, etc.
  • Experience in managing Azure infrastructure, Azure storage accounts and deploying workloads on Azure virtual machines (VMs), virtual networks, cloud services, resource groups, express route, traffic manager, VPN, load balancing, application gateways, auto-scaling and cloud services

Colorado Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado residents is $94,500 to $171,700. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
