Job Description

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

Basic Qualifications

5 Years with Bachelors in Science; 3 Years with Masters; 0 Years with PhD.- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Preferred Qualifications

This position requires technical ability to assist in the development of design and maintenance improvements for A4W reactor plant fluid systems and mechanical components. The engineer will assist with design studies (e.g., root cause analysis, new design development), identify life-cycle cost reductions, conduct laboratory testing, analyze results, and assist with developing integrated technical positions and recommendations for customer (NAVSEA 08 and NNL) approval. The engineer will perform liaison services (i.e., for shipyards and CVN68 Class ships) to solve problems identified during equipment manufacture, installation, operation, and maintenance. The engineer will assist in developing ShipAlt products and provisioning documentation, and maintain technical manuals and drawings. The ideal candidate will possess reactor or steam plant knowledge, and some level of expertise in power piping design/analysis. The individual shall have graduated from an ABET accredited institution with a BS degree (mechanical, marine, nuclear or chemical engineering) and have excellent verbal and technical writing skills. Experience with NNL and NAVSEA 08, Navy reactor plant operator or test engineer a plus.
