Job Description

WGL - Materials Engineer II/III

WGL is seeking a Materials Engineer II/III to evaluate, approve and address field issues and concerns related to materials, tooling and processes. You will lead significant material failure investigations, takes a leadership role with other local distribution companies (LDCs) and industry groups regarding materials engineering to promote safe and reliable service and maximize cost savings.

You will

  • Recommend material (gas carrying) additions and deletions for items listed in the Washington Gas stock book; interacts with various departments, including Supply Chain designee, regarding material sourcing activity and updating of stock book.
  • Support material failure investigations, including gathering evidence, reviewing and evaluating information, distributing alerts, coordinating tests internally or by third party forensic experts. Recommends next steps.
  • Write evaluation reports for proposed materials, material alternatives, and failure investigations.
  • Interact with manufacturers and vendors on new products or materials, changes to manufacturing plant or process, finding suitable replacement or alternative items and manufacturers in a timely fashion.
  • Conduct research with other LDCs and industry groups prior to approval of new materials, or processes.
  • Evaluate requests regarding material, process or tooling issues, malfunctions / misuse of equipment, use of new technology; meets with Construction or Operations department and develops timely solutions.
  • Participate actively on materials and emerging ecosystem-related special projects, including serving as liaison for Corporate Engineering with Construction, Operations and other groups.
  • Prepare forensic evidence and develops presentations from the data gathered to demonstrate the root cause of incidents for litigation purposes.


You must have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related engineering field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in materials engineering or subject matter expertise in similar field.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of relevant codes (e.g., ASTM, ANSI, API standards), regulations (49 CFR Part 192), investigation techniques, and experience with root cause analyses.
  • Experience in the area of natural gas
  • "Engineer-in-Training Certificate"
