IT Director -- Architecture Consulting, Standards, and Development

We are looking for an experienced hands-on IT Director -- Architecture Consulting, Standards, and Development to be based in Raleigh/Durham, NC.

This role involves working very closely with senior leadership in Corporate Ops and IT units to design and deliver high-performance software services and applications that are used and shared by the entire organization. This role will facilitate the implementation and consultation of our software architecture standards for the entire Corporate IT organization. This role will have overall responsibility for the strategy, architecture, development, ongoing support and enhancement of our reference architecture.

In this role, the candidate will manage a team of application architects who are embedded in the various scrum teams throughout the IT organization using the Agile Scrum methodology and following our reference model, established by project Phoenix. At LabCorp, we incorporating all contributions from all software developers, middleware engineers, and infrastructure architects into the current and future reference architecture. This role will be responsible to gather innovations, lead architectural alignment, collaborate with the senior management about new standards, incorporate the agreed upon standards into our software code as well as frameworks, development methodologies, security, DevOps practices, and governing processes.

  • Collaborate and partner with Senior Leadership in Corporate Operations and IT Leadership along with Business Analysts, QA and Infrastructure teams to lead very large projects.
  • Identify and communicate engineering and infrastructure tradeoffs and choose appropriate technologies while working to solve complex problems with the diagnostic laboratory ecosystem.
  • Demonstrate experience leading successful development efforts utilizing lean Agile best practices
  • Promote sharing of domain expertise and knowledge across the team
  • Mentor employees in coding and development skills
  • Attract, select, and retain a talented team
  • Vendor selection and management along with associated agreements, statements of work, etc.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in :
    • Enterprise Application Development - Patterns, Tools and Techniques
    • Agile Development Methodologies
    • Peer reviews of design and code
    • Software Architecture
    • Java technologies (Spring Framework, JDBC, etc.)
    • Databases (Oracle, NoSQL technologies, SQL, etc.)


  • Normally B.S. Degree required w/7-10 years of experience.


  • 10+ years of experience in the architecting enterprise solution using Java/ C# / JavaScript / HTML
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related degree
  • 5+ years leadership experience coordinating large cross-functional teams
  • Knowledge of client-side JavaScript frameworks and standards (Angular, React, jQuery, MVC, MVVM, etc.)
  • Expertise with Java development using Spring, Hibernate, Maven, and other frameworks
  • Experience creating and consuming RESTful as well as SOAP service architectures
  • Advanced use of relational databases such as DB2, Oracle 11G, or MS SQL Server
  • Candidate must flourish in a fast paced, iterative, deadline driven environment
  • Strong communication and organizational skills (oral, written, and presentation) are critical to success among this company of talented individuals
