Advanced Systems Modeling & Controls Engineer, AVTC

Serve as the Argonne Subject Matter Expert for all vehicle modeling, simulation, and controls for the Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition (AVTC) program. Develop and execute engineering deliverables and custom training materials and serve as a key mentor for participating AVTC students. Lead in the development of new highly customized vehicle software models to enable competition teams to utilize advanced engineering tools, including controller Model in the Loop (MIL) and Hardware in the Loop (HIL) development and testing environments.

Customize embedded control systems to enable university utilization of advanced powertrain components and support investigations into simulation/testing tools for connected and automated vehicle features. Lead in the development of new data acquisition systems and manage all data collection for competition vehicles. Chair modeling and software working groups with AVTC industry partners to ensure best practices for software development and to support the development of vehicle and component models. Contribute to the development of test procedures for EcoCAR vehicle testing activities and collaborate with associated research projects within Argonne's Center for Transportation Research.

Postion Requirements:
  • Master's Degree and 5+ years of experience or equivalent. PhD and 4+ Years of experience or equivalent.
  • The successful candidate must have participated in the AVTC program as a student for a minimum of 2 years.
  • Knowledge of vehicle modeling, simulation and analysis, MIL, and HIL development tools.
  • Knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink, Autonomie, dSPACE ControlDesk, and Vector CANoe.
  • Knowledge of customized embedded control systems of advanced powertrain components.
  • Knowledge of vehicle serial communication protocols, specifically CAN and GMLAN.
  • Knowledge of vehicle modeling, simulation and analysis.
  • Knowledge of battery electric and hybrid electric vehicles, their components and operation.
  • Knowledge of DOE advanced vehicle technology competitions.
  • Skill in leadership, time management and working as a team member.
  • Skill in oral and written communications, including professional presentations and technical writing.
  • Skill in MS Word, Excel, Project, Access, and PowerPoint computer software.
  • Skill in interacting with external sponsors, including industrial professionals and government officials.
