Scientist - Electro-chemical Materials Science

The Materials Science Division (MSD) of Argonne National Laboratory is seeking applicants for a research scientist and group leader position in the areas of chemistry or materials science. Preference will be given to an accomplished, internationally recognized mid- to senior- level scientist whose intellectual leadership is evidenced by an outstanding publication record, invited talks at major topical conferences, awards, and other recognition. Emphasis will be placed on candidates with expertise in fundamental experimental aspects of electrochemical systems.

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research in a dynamic and collaborative environment of chemists, materials scientists, and physicists. She or he will leverage the resources, facilities, and expertise at Argonne to:
  • Lead the existing research group in the area of electrochemical systems with capabilities in material synthesis and state-of-the-art characterization of electrochemical interfaces.
  • Create and execute on a vision for a prominent role of electrochemistry in MSD
  • Contribute to Argonne's overall electrochemistry strategy, including energy storage/conversion, electrochemical synthesis, electrocatalysis, etc.


The successful candidate will be expected to grow MSD's forefront presence in electrochemical materials science and to successfully pursue funding from appropriate sponsors to support the group research activities.

Position Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
  • Experience at a level typically achieved with a Ph.D. and at least 10 years of research in academia, industry, or a national laboratory setting.
  • Deep expertise and knowledge of experimental electrochemical energy storage, electrocatalysis, and surface and interface electrochemistry.
  • Demonstrated experience with leadership and management of research projects and teams.
  • Experience, and interest, in pursuing use-inspired, as well as fundamental, research would be desirable.


The position will remain opened until filled; starting date is flexible, with a target of March 1, 2022.

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD4 or RD5) dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills brought to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience. The requirements of the various levels are as follows:
  • At a RD4 Level: Doctorate and 6+ years.
  • At a RD5 Level:Doctorate and 10+ years.
