Principal Nuclear Engineer

The Nuclear Science and Engineering Division (NSE) is seeking a highly motivated Principal Nuclear Engineer to join the Research and Test Reactors (RTR) Department ( The RTR Department conducts work related to converting existing research reactors to the use of new fuel, including possible modification of the fuel assembly, reactor system, and/or operation (fuel cycle and other characteristics). Furthermore, the Department performs research related to new reactor designs and reactor feasibility studies.

The individual will perform structural mechanics and/or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses relevant to the design and analysis of nuclear fuel systems and other nuclear reactor components, using finite element and volume methods. The individual will validate and calibrate models using experimental results and/or alternative simulation, perform Verification and Validation (V&V) of structural analysis and/or computational fluid dynamics software codes in accordance with technical program requirements. The individual will document and prepare reports, presentations, and manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications in collaboration with other staff at Argonne and external institutions and national laboratories.

Position Requirements:
  • Knowledge of computational techniques, numerical methods, and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of structural analysis and/or CFD relevant to nuclear reactors, components or other energy systems.
  • Knowledge of fluid-structure interaction would be an asset.
  • Skill in the conception, design, and evaluation of innovative approaches and solutions to quantitative problems is necessary.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in using one or more of the following finite element analysis software: COMSOL, STAR-CCM+, and ABAQUS
  • Skill in the conception, design, and evaluation of innovative approaches and solutions to quantitative problems is necessary.
  • Skill in the application of programming languages (e.g. Python, Fortran, MATLAB, C/C++) for scripting and data analysis.
  • Background knowledge of modeling engineering systems.
  • Basic understanding and/or familiarity with software Verification and Validation (V&V) approaches.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, oral and written communication.
