Sr. Director, Corporate Strategy Disease Area Innovation Lead

The Disease Area Portfolio Innovation Lead (DAPIL) in the Corporate Strategy (CS) team, reporting directly into the Head of Corporate Strategy and Business Innovation, is accountable for leading commercial evaluation of external opportunities, providing strategic input to proactive mapping and prioritization of external opportunities, the development of disease area strategic plans, addressing strategic questions and informing disease area level investment decisions and narrative across multiple therapeutic areas. DAPIL brings expertise in terms of industry and market trends and demonstrates deep understanding of Biogen’s portfolio, customers and capabilities. She/he collaborates with cross-functional partners and leaders in identifying, evaluating, and recommending investment opportunities and priorities to drive near, mid and long-term growth and build multi-franchise portfolio. She/he participates in the corporate strategic planning process by providing disease are specific deliverables and input and conducting strategic assessments on key business questions as directed by the Head of Corporate Strategy. This is a critical role with high visibility across the Global and Regional organization and significant exposure to the senior leadership of Biogen.

Specific Accountabilities:

• Build expertise of the disease areas and clearly articulate growth opportunities, competitive differentiation, and value drivers and risks

• Collaborate closely with the PDC leads, R&D, Medical, PO&T, and Finance teams in developing disease area strategic plans.

• Provide strategic input on growth opportunities, portfolio gaps, assess capability requirements and identify areas for innovation, and help prioritize investment choices.

• Partner with R&D leaders to evaluate and develop strategic plans in adjacent or emerging disease areas to inform Executive Committee’s investment decisions.

• Partner with R&D and BD to proactively map and prioritize external opportunities, including M&A, licensing, acquisition within each growth area.

• Partner with functions to assess requirements for capability investments and optimization in support of growth strategies and priorities within disease areas. Explore synergies and innovative solutions across the value chain within each disease area and propose strategic initiatives

• Lead commercial diligence of external opportunities, support development and presentation of the business cases to the External Innovation Committee and to the Executive Committee and provide input into contracting, integration plan, and development of internal and external communications of the deals.

• Work closely with Corporate Strategic planning lead to support portfolio investment and optimization efforts and trade-off assessments by providing required input across disease areas.

• Collaborate with R&D and cross-functional partners on Trigger Point Business Plans to characterize the impact of trigger events in internal portfolio, and investment priorities and present recommendations to the R&D leadership and Executive Committee for review and endorsement.

• Ensure quality, consistency and efficiencies in critical deliverables by developing and implementing standardized strategy and business development assessment frameworks and assumptions

• Support Head of Corporate Strategy in identifying and addressing critical business questions by designing and implementing primary and secondary research and analytics and by leveraging internal expertise/capabilities effectively.

• Represent Biogen and corporate strategy function in the external meetings with companies, partners, and academics to evaluate the opportunities for investments in partnership with R&D and PO&T.

• Lead a small team of disease area portfolio innovation managers, develop talent, and provide coaching of other members within the team. Prioritize efforts for his/her team effectively and align assignments and actions to the development plans.

• Contribute to creating a culture of learning, growth and collaboration within Corporate Strategy team and Biogen by contributing to best practices sharing and providing input as subject matter experts.

  • Seasoned commercial professional with 10+ years of experience in biopharmaceutical industry in commercial and or business functions and global competency required
  • Solid biopharma experience in commercialization and experience in business development, adjacent fields (devices, Dx , etc.), and thorough understanding of the biopharma value chain required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of basic biology and experience working with R&D functions and external medical and technical experts
  • Strong understanding of customer insights, market dynamics, and value chain with an ability to translate insights into strategic levers and actionable priorities and recommendations
  • Demonstrated experience in developing strategic plans or growth strategies, and driving organizational alignment and influencing decisions on investment priorities and proposals
  • Experiencein new product planning and or inline products and business development commercial evaluations and prioritization and various types of transactions including M&A, acquisition, and partnerships, etc. in broad number of therapeutic areas
  • Strategic assessments of business opportunities and needs, including hypothesis development, analyses, and crisp actionable recommendations
  • Solid understanding of business financials, valuation frameworks, and P&L
  • Forecasting and financial modelling and management of several diverse projects, including budgets, contracts, vendors, and primary and secondary research
  • Proven experiences in recruiting, developing and managing people and tangible contributions to creating a high performing and engaged team


· Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced scientific degree or MBA highly preferred

· Anticipated travel (Post Covid): 10% international
