Job Title: Senior Engineer Packaging R&D Equipment

Job Location: Hershey, PA


The successful candidate will report to Sr. Manager - Packaging R&D and will provide support to Packaging R&D Department Engineers, Marketing and Technical Center, Product Development/Research personnel and others, in the pilot plant located in Hershey, PA and Semi Works plant located in York, PA.

Duties include but not limited to: Leads/Coordinates all aspects of pilot plant packaging activities e.g labeling, film materials, equipment, contract labor etc targeted towards test market (microbattle) launches, product development samples and sales samples production. Set up, operation and maintenance of numerous pieces of packaging equipment including scheduling, sanitation, obtaining materials and finished product to support runs. Troubleshoot mechanical equipment malfunctions, identify, communicate needs, manage and install replacement parts for all appropriate equipment to minimize downtime, maintain functionality and optimize efficiency. Modify and upgrade existing equipment when necessary. Recommend temporary personnel staffing levels to project leads and coordinate temporary personnel activities when necessary to support packaging projects. Non-routine tasks of moderate complexity and possibly non-standard procedures to be performed with general supervision. Lifting of upto 50 pounds is required.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead packaging activities in the Hershey pilot plant and Semiworks plant by providing packaging machine operation expertise, engineering support, supervising temporary workforce and conducting/supervising packaging trials as required.
  • Provide mechanical troubleshooting on all packaging equipment.
  • In cooperation with Product Development and other customers, develop a schedule of pilot plant and Semiworks plant runs and activities; develop/improve process and ways of working as applicable; work to resolve conflicts and issues that may affect scheduled runs.
  • Identify material, equipment and personnel resources needed to support/lead projects as necessary. Identification of appropriate equipment to include existing pilot plant equipment as well as idle assets.
  • Assist Sr. Manager and engineering capital strategy team in development of spending justifictions and capital expenditure requests.
  • Provide training and oversight to packaging machine technicians as applicable.
  • Recommend staffing levels to project champions and coordinate temporary work force personnel as necessary to support packaging projects.
  • Actively manage and maintain inventories of packaging structures, machine parts and hand tools required to support the equipment and project responsibilities.
  • As needs dictate, work with vendors to determine other materials available to meet ever changing product development needs.
  • Generate purchase requisitions for materials, tools and parts as necessary.
  • Support activities of Packaging R&D and Packaging Laboratory by conducting routine and non-routine testing of some complexity as required.
  • Perform routine maintenance, sanitation and organizational duties in Packaging Laboratory as necessary.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required to successfully perform role:

  • Flexibility in work schedule and overtime as required by test packaging and pilot runs.
  • Initiative and ability to handle multiple priorities under stressful situations is critical.
  • Understanding of procedures and practices of GMP's and sanitation.
  • Good communication skills to address broad customer base.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to coordinate schedules to manage work load.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse group of people.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and experience operating high speed packaging equipment.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • BS Mechanical/Electrical engineering preferred or related discipline.

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in a manufacturing or pilot plant environment. Formal data reporting capability and mechanical aptitude is required. Experience in packaging machinery operation and/or maintenance is highly preferred
