Associate Scientist - Animal Sciences

Responsible for the daily care of laboratory animals. Performs routine tasks, including feeding, watering, and housing of animals. Operates large cleaning and sterilization equipment. Maintains the animal laboratory by stocking needed supplies and performing routine cleaning and maintenance. Works as part of a team and is capable of working flexibly across different areas. May assist scientists by performing routine technical procedures to support research experiments.

Typical Accountabilities
  • Performs daily animal husbandry tasks for a variety of species, routine facility operations tasks, identifies and reports any abnormal findings, and maintains the highest standards of animal care and welfare.
  • Responsible for documenting daily tasks and communicating progress appropriately to the manager.
  • Has core technical skills and supports in vivo studies. May be responsible for a small breeding program.
  • Responsibilities include performing technical procedures such as animal identification, collecting biological samples, assisting scientists with requirements related to their research animals, and administering medicines/compounds.
  • Maintains daily record-keeping for animals and the environment.
  • Operates and/or uses sanitization and sterilization equipment.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and maintains service records on racks and caging equipment as instructed.
  • Responsible for receiving animals and stocking facility supplies.
  • Actively participates in annual goal setting and self-evaluation processes. Will work with the manager to ensure individual and team objectives are met.
  • Expected to maintain awareness of advances and developments in laboratory animal science through continued professional development, including Continued Professional Development (CPD).
  • Ensures own work is performed in accordance with appropriate Safety, Health and Environment (SHE), quality, and compliance standards, e.g. Good Laboratory Standards (GLS).
  • Is required to work flexibly across different areas and participate in the provision of the weekend and out-of-hours support.


Education, Qualifications, Skills & Experience

Required:

High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Essential:
  • Working towards a professional qualification in animal-related sciences.
  • Some experience in animal care & welfare.
  • Basic understanding of SHE & relevant legislative requirements.
  • Capable of obtaining local licenses/certificates.
  • Proficient in verbal and written English language.


Desirable:

• A qualification in animal-related science.
• Previous experience of working in animal research.
