Senior Director, Oncology Translational Pathology

This is a unique opportunity to direct a newly formed tissue biomarkers and digital pathology group at AstraZeneca Oncology

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

AstraZeneca is seeking a senior MD or DVM pathologist with experience in cancer research or cancer biomarker or drug development to lead the pathology group at our Gaithersburg site in Maryland USA, as Senior Director Translational Pathology.

The successful candidate will be required to work effectively within a highly matrixed organization to drive translational research and clinical development of multiple cancer biomarkers linked to primary, secondary and exploratory clinical endpoints.

The candidate will be expected to lead a team of MD and DVM pathologists and liaise closely with internal research and translational scientists and clinicians within our global organization, as well as external academic collaborators.

The candidate will be expected to provide pathological and scientific leadership to the pathology laboratory scientists and research, translational and clinical teams in relation to target validation, assay development and validation for pharmacodynamic, prognostic and predictive biomarkers.

The candidate will coordinate with a cross-functional team of pathologists, image analysts, bioinformaticians and translational medicine scientists to ensure the delivery of high quality biomarker data for review by internal governance committees.

The candidate will be capable of using the latest staining and imaging technologies and analysis tools and to develop new biological insights into mechanism of drug sensitivity and resistance.

Specific duties and major responsibilities include:
  • Developing strategic and effective tissue biomarker strategies for the oncology projects.
  • Partnering with key stakeholders across the company to implement the translational medicine strategy.
  • Implement biomarker and pathology capabilities across the oncology projects.
  • Work in a cross-functional team to be at the forefront of tissue biomarker technology, including digital pathology and multi-dimensional analysis.
  • Support project teams as an internal expert on analysis of tumor tissue and its application to drug development.


Essential Requirements:

This position requires completion of 5 years of formal training and assessment in Anatomical Pathology (MD) or veterinary pathology (DVM) in the USA, or their overseas equivalent (eg FRCPath).

Ph.D., or equivalent research training and experience in Pathology.

At least 10 years of post - qualification experience in research and development.

Appointment at Professor or Associate Professor level at a leading academic center or Director level in a leading Pharmaceutical, Diagnostic or Biotech company.

Demonstrated experience effectively leading a team of pathologists or pathology scientists.

Record of published work in high quality scientific journals

Desirable requirements:

Board certification or overseas equivalent.

Completion of molecular pathology fellowship.

Extensive knowledge of immunooncology

Expertise in biomarker and / or drug development

Experience with clinical trials

Experience with multiplex immuno-fluorescence

Experience with image analysis and artificial intelligence.

Experience with bioinformatics or data analysis.

Experience establishing or leading a CAP-CLIA certified laboratory or overseas equivalent.

Invitations to present at international congresses and meetings.

Invitations to chair or participate in international working groups.

Special Skills/Abilities:
  • A strong understanding of the development of fit for purpose IHC assays through all stages of drug development.
  • Strong skill set in developing and implementing multiplexed immunohistochemistry methodologies from antibody selection, staining optimization, pre-analytical variables assessment to downstream digital and imaging strategies with data dissemination and evaluation capabilities.
  • Prior role in multidisciplinary projects and teams with ability to integrate cross-functional information
  • Understanding of the molecular pathways underlying cancer with demonstrated success in translating to development of drugs.
  • Understanding of how digital pathology can accelerate the drug development process.
  • Must have solid understanding of prognostic and predictive biomarkers and personalized healthcare approaches; understanding of bioinformatics is preferred.
  • Strong strategic thinker with the judgement and skills to influence drug-development teams.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills with ability to represent AstraZeneca Oncology translation medicine internally and externally to academic community and regulatory bodies.
  • Resourceful, motivated, decisive and proactive; must be able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced organization.
  • Thrives in fast-paced, dynamic work environment, bringing a pro-active mentality to the role.
  • Organizational skills with attention to detail and demonstrated ability to review technical reports, biomarker protocols and quantitative analyses.


Job Complexity: Complex team and program management abilities. Will be an integral member of an international cross-functional team of scientists and represent AstraZeneca Translational Medicine/

project teams. Will Manage a team of 5-8 personnel including MD and DVM Pathologists, Scientists and histo-technicians

Supervision: Reports to directly to the Executive Director of Molecular Pathology group, Translational Medicine R&D.

This position is in Gaithersburg, MD
