Position Summary:

The Lead Engineer uses process engineering and food science principles to lead R&D projects. Additionally, he/she will lead program technical strategy development, project design and methodology, test ideas through experimentation, and determine next steps through problem solving. The successful candidate will be leading projects of higher complexity and apply technical rigor to ensure project goals and business objectives are achieved. He/she will need to be able to prioritize his/her work and contribute to strategic directions within R&D. He/she will progress technical research, by disciplined application of the scientific method through the project management process and the transfer of knowledge to Product Development, Commercialization and/or Operations teams. Hands-on skills involving running laboratory and pilot plant equipment is required. In addition to working with R&D team members, the staff engineer is expected to be able to work alongside our cross-functional partners in Marketing, Product Development, Sensory, Manufacturing, Legal, Quality and other Supply Chain departments as well as our M&A partners. Under general direction, this individual will take the initiative to secure, from all available sources, pertinent advice, ideas, and information having a bearing upon the project. Presentation of the project results will be expected in both written and oral forms.


  • Actively seek new technologies and innovation opportunities .
  • Lead complex process development and process validation to support product commercialization in various areas for Amplify Snack Brands.
  • Test ideas through experimental design, collect and analyze data using analytical process tools to provide recommendations.
  • Determine next steps through problem solving.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional groups to ideate, identify, develop solutions, and commercialize new technologies.
  • Have a good understanding of current processing technologies across the snacks industry and continue to explore new and breakthrough technologies.
  • Mentor and guide junior scientists and engineers within R&D.
  • Provide leadership and instruction to contract manufacture plant technicians.
  • Ability to connect and interact with peers from other within and other industries to exchange information and ideas in area of expertise where appropriate

Process development; lab & pilot-plant equipment operation

  • Operate or direct the operation of lab or pilot-plant equipment in the performance of tests or experiments.
  • Lead the development of new processes through research and experimentation to deliver project results.
  • Hands-on work involving running lab, pilot plant and factory equipment.

Research design/data analysis/report writing/ presentation

  • Design and execute experiments, analyze data, and provide conclusions using an appropriate statistical tool. Prepare all project reports as required. Make presentations of significant results to drive business decisions.

Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsibilities:

  • Experience leading a cross-functional team in a development of new process and/or technologies.
  • Sound technical knowledge and capability of applying knowledge to research projects.
  • Understanding of the fundamentals of chocolate including formulations, manufacturing, forming, and downstream processes.
  • Understanding of the impact of the key processing parameters in the conversion of raw ingredient and in-process material to finished product.
  • Demonstrated excellence in project leadership and decision-making ability.
  • Comfortable with operating pilot plant and/or lab equipment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated mathematical and statistical skills.
  • Possesses computer skills (basic knowledge of Word, Access, Excel, Exchange)
  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently in a flexible work environment with changing priorities.


  • The role requires 30-40% travel


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:


  • BS degree in Chemical Engineering, Food Engineering, Food Science, Chemistry, or related field or equivalent


  • 5-10+ years (B.S. food/engineering degree) or 3-5+ years (M.S.) in R&D environment in process development, process validation, food engineering.
  • Intern and prior research project work will be considered.
  • Experience in Snack Food manufacturing is a plus.
