Reviews patient encounters in the Practice Management System/Patient Record to ensure that payer specific billing requirements are met and to ensure appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes in accordance with nationally recognized coding guidelines. Resolves routine and complex system edits to ensure a clean encounter is submitted to the payer. Helps educate physicians and staff on proper coding guidelines.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Review physician chart notes/reports and append appropriate CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10 codes, and
  • modifiers as required
  • Manages work files to resolve coding edits by researching and using the most up-to-date tools available in order to make the appropriate and compliant corrections for reimbursement
  • Monitors coding and documentation accuracy by performing regular audits of potential areas of risk.
  • Knowledge of Local Coverage Determinations and National Coverage Determinations, and coverage policies to determine medical necessity
  • Serves as a resource to provide and obtains information on accurate and ethical coding as well as documentation standards, guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains knowledge of current coding and regulatory issues as they relate to the practice specialty
  • Researches and resolves any assigned coding related issues or related projects
  • Conducts accurate and timely review and coding of procedures for oncology department
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned
  • Abstracts relevant clinical and demographic information from the medical record to assign ICD-9-CM/ICD-10-CM, ICD-9-PCS/ICD-10-PCS, and CPT-4 codes in accordance with coding and reimbursement guidelines.
  • Using knowledge of insurance plans and payers, attach appropriate modifiers, update the billing system to facilitate charge entry and collections
  • Assist in maintaining accurate information regarding coding, updates, approved diagnoses for drugs
  • Communicate with providers and clinical staff regarding coding questions and new coding requirements
  • Review physician reports and append appropriate CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10 codes, and modifiers as required
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Full COVID-19 vaccination is an essential requirement of this role. UnitedHealth Group will adhere to all federal, state and local regulations as well as all client requirements and will obtain necessary proof of vaccination prior to employment to ensure compliance.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • AAPC or CPC credential
  • 1+ years coding experience
  • Knowledge of E&M and laboratory coding
  • EMR experience
