The Medicare Advantage Product Strategy team is responsible for identifying and supporting markets with imminent risk transfer and delegation, and ensuring their infrastructure is prepared to manage incoming membership. The MAPS Medical Director will provide leadership to and is accountable for the performance and direction through multiple layers of management and senior level professional staff. This position will develop and execute strategies for a function or discipline that span a large business unit or multiple markets/sites. This position will be responsible for supporting Medicare Advantage Product Strategy across the enterprise OptumCare entities, and in the process develop relationships and drive performance improvement for risk and quality outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Requires assessing current programs/model delivery,
  • Assess readiness/timing to market/current Risk Bearing Entity status,
  • Review current market individual and group physician relationships - employed and IPA
  • Review current market contracts (FFS, Incentives, Gain share, risk pool)
  • Assess engagement and willingness of market PCPs to participate (early adopters/teachable spirits)
  • Assess capacity - designated medical directors, support team (POD) infrastructure, RAF RNs, Coders, Quality RNs, analyst,
  • Review current and future potential incentive models,
  • Performance review (RAPS, Quality, Cost and Care)
  • Create pro forma/projections of likely success
  • Supervise Didactic/functional (live) education and training in market (DFW)
  • Ride Along - PCP office visit
  • POD team meeting and management
  • Physician Business Dinner
  • Learning Session
  • Jumbo group management via Joint Operating Committee (JOC) meetings
  • Training, operational tactics, market strategies, functional management of activities via "Best Year Yet" (BYY) management
  • Deliver presentations to others (e.g., employer groups, providers, internal staff) on clinically related topics
  • Educate others (e.g., employer groups, providers, internal staff) on implications of policies or regulations related to provision of care or medical management
  • Educate teams on clinical quality/cost/service initiatives
  • Manage challenging conversations with appropriate interpersonal dynamics when discussing medical decisions and areas of disagreement
  • Present clinical programs/results to others (e.g., client/employer meetings, physicians, healthcare providers)
  • Deliver group presentations on clinical programs/data/information
  • Explain/influence development of technical/clinical communications that will be delivered to external audiences (e.g., quality/RAF policies, programs, processes)
  • Discuss clinical/quality program outcomes/data/performance with providers/employers/accreditors/regulators

Required Qualifications:
  • Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.)
  • Five or more years of clinical experience
  • Five or more years of experience in managed care
  • Active, unrestricted medical license in applicable state(s), or ability to obtain licenses rapidly
  • Current board certification
  • Willingness to travel up to 50%, or as determined by business need

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) fluency
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to bridge clinical, financial and administrative priorities, personnel, and skills
