Postdoctoral Appointee - Numerical Modeler/Regional Climate

Argonne National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory located near Chicago, Illinois, has an opening for a highly motivated post-doctoral appointee jointly at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility and the Environmental Science Division. The successful applicant will collaborate with a group of scientists working on an ongoing continental scale convection-resolving regional scale climate modeling project. This position is for application of WRF and development and scaling of GPU versions of the code for multi-decadal simulations on the leading high performance computing platforms at ALCF and other Department of Energy computational platforms. The candidate must possess considerable knowledge in using high performance computational platforms, understanding of process scale models of atmospheric phenomena experience in using WRF and expertise and interest in data analysis and visualization. Strong background in numerical modeling and performing data analysis is required. Minimum educational requirement for this position is a Ph.D. in geophysical science or a related field. This is a two-year position that we want to fill immediately.


Contributes technical expertise through analysis and support for programs and projects associated with HPC and computational problems related to earth system science and other environmental research programs. Develops, evaluates, and applies analytical approaches, synthesis activities, computational tools; compiles results, prepares reports, publications and documentation . T his position is for projects related to applying and developing regional scale climate models in HPC environment, working with a team of scientists interested in modeling and evaluating climate related risks at local and regional scales.

Position Requirements
  • A recent (graduated in the last 3 years) Ph.D. in engineering, or physical sciences related to Atmospheric Sciences, computational science or engineering.
  • Technical knowledge in using HPC systems for numerical simulations with large science codes.
  • Familiarity with the use of GPU based systems for computing.
  • Technical knowledge of regional climate models, Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, in particular.
  • Skills in clear, concise writing of technical papers and in interacting and communicating effectively with colleagues.
  • Considerable problem-solving skills.
  • Considerable organizational skills and flexibility in coordinating a broad spectrum of activities.
  • Knowledge of atmospheric physics, process scale models and numerical computation techniques.
    Some knowledge of using atmospheric observational datasets, visualization and analysis
  • Ability to model Argonne's core values: impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
