Postdoctoral Appointee - AI and Climate Science

We have an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Researcher position focusing on AI and Climate Science at Argonne National Laboratory. This appointment will be a joint appointment between the Environmental Science (EVS) Division, Mathematics and Computer Science Division (MCS), and the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) all embedded within our Computer, Environment, and Life Sciences (CELS) Directorate. The project is designed to develop innovative artificial intelligence (AI) / machine learning (ML) methods for data assimilation into climate model emulators, reference PDE models assisted by AI emulators and in process scale models for parameter optimization. The successful applicant will help develop and test new ML/AI algorithms on AI exascale systems (https://www.alcf.anl.gov/polaris) and new and emerging hardware platforms for applications to AI for Science (AI4S). This project is part of the laboratory initiative on AI4S and provides extensive opportunities for training and participating in various exciting AI4S related activities at the laboratory and ALCF. The selected candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team extending from climate sciences, applied mathematics and high-performance computing.

Position Requirements
  • A recent (graduated in the last 3 years) Ph.D. in engineering, or physical sciences related to Atmospheric Sciences or engineering.
  • Experience in working on climate/weather models or related PDE based forecasting systems, experience in AI/ML algorithm development and applications and exposure to high-performance computing resources is required.
  • Knowledge in using GPU based computational platforms, processing of large datasets from atmospheric/climate observations and numerical models of climate/weather is strongly preferred. Ability to think independently and innovatively to develop exceptional technical solutions required.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills required to interact effectively, tactfully and discreetly with all internal/external contacts and to develop effective working relationships.
  • Ability to write research reports and publications required.
  • Ability to model Argonne's core values: impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
