Job Description

The New York Times is looking for a technical product manager to oversee the systems and technology that power the distribution and fulfillment of our newspaper subscription business. The New York Times newspaper is a 170 year old institution that remains resilient through its healthy circulation. The future of our newspaper business is promising and we have ambitious plans in transforming our distribution and fulfillment systems into modern technology that will support the critical operations in delivering the newspaper to loyal households across the country. And so we need someone who is customer experience obsessed and has a keen sensibility for precision, resilience and reliability. This person is excited about retiring fulfillment components from monolithic structures and building horizontally scalable services. This person is also comfortable with managing multiple stakeholder relationships in various levels across the organization. This role is part of our product management team in our Subscription Platforms Group.

SPG is one of several groups within our Core Platforms Mission. We work on capabilities that support our fast-growing subscription business. Capabilities include product and offers, subscription management, billing and invoicing, payment processing, financial accounting and reporting, digital and newspaper order fulfillment, and more.

About The Role

We are seeking a product manager who would manage our current fulfillment stack, own the migration to the new home delivery system and envision the future ecosystem that would support the distribution and fulfillment of the home delivery business. This product manager will contribute to the success of the team by:
  • Driving the vision and strategy on a reliable, scalable and efficient solution for home delivery fulfillment
  • Establishing and nurturing relationships with internal partners in front-end feature teams like Customer Care and Account, stakeholders like home delivery operations and regional distribution managers and external partners like our distribution vendors
  • Prioritizing crucial initiatives that help accelerate the operational maturity of the current solution while advancing work for the new home delivery system
  • Building a roadmap, managing a backlog of product and technology initiatives that benefit the print production and distribution domain adhering to the principles of SPG
  • Having the aptitude to understand concepts and frameworks required to run a successful home delivery operations like cloud technologies, batch jobs, security infrastructure and web services
  • Understanding the criticality of testing and automation
  • Empathizing with engineering partners and proactively contributing to a culture of engineering excellence with a comfort in managing and prioritizing technical debt
  • Being data-driven through the use of data analytics for improved newspaper delivery as well as better observability and decision making in our fulfillment systems
  • Collaborating with Delivery Engineering in discovering new tooling that could potentially be enablers for your team
  • Making security and compliance an integral part of managing our fulfillment systems through a strong partnership with the Infosec team


You will report to the Director of Product for Subscription Platforms.

About You

You come with experience in technical product management and have led a collaborative team across development functions. You are comfortable driving technical discussions with engineering leads and other technical product managers. You are also at ease in translating highly technical concepts into digestible ideas for business stakeholders.

Your comfort with data and analytics will be most useful in prioritizing work in your roadmap and more critically, tracking and measuring your progress in improving business metrics. You are equally motivated by working in both modern and legacy systems and find excitement in delivering incremental system improvements and optimizations. You embody an entrepreneurial mindset by easily tapping into your creativity, curiosity and determination. You recognize the importance of influence over authority and use your influence in managing relationships with your stakeholders, partners and team members. You will guide the narrative around what you and your team deliver so you will be your team's advocate by sharing the impactful work you ship.

Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of technical product management experience, preferably in a commerce development environment. Experience with platform product management required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to present complex technical information in a clear manner to peers, engineers, and senior leaders.
  • Solid technical background; Understanding and/or experience in CI/CD and web frameworks
  • Experience in assessing and addressing technical risks and their impact in business operations
  • Experience with Agile software development methodology
  • Energized by collaborating across the organization with other engineers, product leads, designers and general managers belonging to other missions
  • Experience working with transforming technology
