Job Description

About the position

Wirecutter is seeking a senior staff writer to write reviews and blog posts about audio/video and home theater products, with a focus on televisions, projectors, media players and other video categories, and to contribute to other editorial projects as needed. You will be the primary voice of our TV coverage, and your #1 goal is to shepherd our readers to the best picks by combining thorough technical knowledge with a writing style that is clear, approachable, and jargon-free.

As a senior staff writer on the AV team, you will be responsible for maintaining multiple existing long-form guides to the best TVs, projectors, screens, etc.-and for the creation of new guides that fill in gaps in our existing home theater coverage. You will also contribute related content in the form of how-to articles, seasonal blogs, videos, newsletters, and social posts. You will report to a supervising editor, and your day-to-day workflow will involve interacting with a large team of editors, producers, fact-checkers, and other colleagues, primarily through team tools like Zoom and Slack. This role has the potential to be remote.

  • Research, report, and write long-form guides and short-form posts on home theater and home video; think creatively about sources, identify experts, and plan and conduct meaningful short- and long-term tests
  • Request product samples and process their return
  • Call experts and review academic journal articles and other scientific data; methodically scan user reviews and forums to find what truly matters to readers
  • Collaborate with editors to conceive new content and formats and move ideas from pitch to publish
  • Collaborate with photo, video, and illustration departments to produce visuals to support guides and blog posts
  • Work with our community team to respond to reader feedback and questions; work with our affiliate team to resolve stock issues on recommendations; work with our operations team on product orders and testing plans.
  • May be required to attend trade shows and product news events as needed to build contacts and expertise in relevant topic areas
  • Perform related work as assigned

  • 5+ years experience writing at a major publication, preferably online
  • Excellent communication and task management skills in a remote work environment; patience to work through multiple rounds of edits and balance multiple reporting projects and deadlines simultaneously; ability to work very independently, with minimal supervision.
  • Mastery over the totality of specific coverage areas, with detailed knowledge and the ability to communicate it to readers in a clear, easy-to-understand way. Knows the products and companies within their beat like the back of their hand. Seeks insider information about how products are made and understands the business behind the companies they write about.
  • Large network of PR reps and product managers
  • Experience creating and administering tests for product reviews; experience gathering data and presenting it to readers in a clear, concise way to help guide the testing and review process
  • Knowledge of and practical experience with display calibration methods, for both SDR and HDR TVs and projectors. Experience with Portrait Displays's Calman measurement software and the related measurement tools (light meters, test pattern generators, etc.)
  • If remote, the candidate must have space for reviewing multiple large TVs or home projectors at the same time.
