Job Description

The Graphics Desk at The New York Times is looking for an experienced editor to guide ambitious visual approaches to news, enterprise and investigative reporting. This editor will edit breaking news, conceive of new lines of reporting, shepherd fast-turn graphics projects, and push lines of enterprise and investigative reporting.

This editor will primarily work with small teams of visualization experts to create stories. Some projects will involve leading teams that span multiple desks in the newsroom, which will include providing guidance and vision for a group with diverse journalistic skills and experience.

The Graphics Desk is a close-knit unit of visual thinkers with a shared vision to creatively cover the news and develop design solutions in a collaborative setting. Even when working remotely, there is joint sketching and refining visual ideas in a combined effort.

We're looking for an editor who:
  • is full of story ideas every day. You'll be a part of the desk's leadership, running coverage across all subjects. You'll guide our visual journalists as they pursue sources and stories, and you'll decide how to shape our visual report.
  • is an expert at creating and editing visuals. You should have experience building graphics and visual stories, and have an understanding of how to help others craft this kind of work.
  • is comfortable editing and shaping stories that combine graphics and narrative text. This editor should coach others to improve their reporting, and strong news judgment is essential.
  • has a thoughtful eye for matching talent to stories, as well as for recognizing when a project can be a growth opportunity for one of our visual journalists.
