Senior Welding and NDT Engineer

Job Description
BAE Systems, one of the world's leading defense contractors and a stable Fortune 500 company, is hiring a Welding and NDT Engineer to support the manufacturing of weapon systems for the military - primarily the Navy.

No two days will be the same in our busy union climate-controlled manufacturing environment. In this role, you will communicate with management and welders, program management and the customer. This position will work a 9/80 schedule where you will have every other Friday off.

The Welding and NDT Engineer provides engineering support for welding operations in the manufacture of combat products. The Welding Engineer:
  • Develops concepts, designs, performance, and fabrication, test and modifications for these products.
  • Analyzes NDT inspection reports and data to understand root cause and provide repair plans to production.
  • Recommends weld equipment.
  • Prepares and conducts weld engineering analysis of materials and procedures, engaged in weld procedure and performance qualifications.
  • Uses knowledge of metallurgy, material weldability, welding robotics, and associated programming.
  • Reviews supplier capability and suitability to provide acceptable product and comply with government specifications.
  • Develops or contributes to the creation of welding standards and specifications.
  • Develops special weld repairs as necessary.
  • Addresses non-conformances and assists in Root Cause and Corrective Action activities.
  • Develops and writes technical documentation, makes revisions to existing documentation, and provides input to technical papers or presentations.
  • Ability to set up, organize, and populate Manufacturing Engineering production information using Microsoft Access, Excel and Project.
  • Develops work documentation including routings and work instructions to guide weld workforce how to perform welding tasks.
  • A background in heavy fabrication and knowledge of pressure vessels is particularly helpful as is the ability to adjust priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Weld Engineering, Weld Engineering Technology, Metallurgy or Level III NDT certification plus 4 years relevant experience.
  • Expert knowledge of NDT inspection criteria and interpretation of inspection results.
  • Expert knowledge of concepts, practices and procedures of Weld Engineering.
  • Capable of working with current computer applications, CAD programs, and model manipulation.
  • Understanding of equipment and technologies relevant to welding and Weld Engineering.
  • Ability to solve complex technical problems that require a professional level of Weld Engineering knowledge.
  • Working knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of a relevant technical field of specialization.
  • Familiarity with current computer applications and technologies in applicable engineering disciplines.
  • Ability to solve moderately complex technical design and development problems that require a professional level of engineering knowledge.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with customers to solve moderately complex technical problems
  • Excellent understanding of welding specifications such as AWS or NAVSEA.

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills
  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems such as Baan or Oracle.
  • Six Sigma and/or Lean certification.
  • Certification with AWS as a CWI or other relevant certification.
  • Bachelor's degree in Weld Engineering or similar field and NDT Level II certification.
  • Defense contractor experience.
  • Familiarity with weld procedure and performance qualification to NAVSEA S9074-AQ-GIB-010/248 or similar.
  • Familiarity with NDT procedure qualification to T9074-AS-GIB-010/271 or similar.
  • Experience with Capital Project implementation of new equipment and/or factory setup.
  • Previous experience with digital introduction on equipment for weld parameter tracking.
