Boise White Paper, L.L.C. (Boise) desires to employ a full-time Assistant Paper Machine Superintendent in International Falls, Minnesota. Boise operates two paper production lines at the mill. The paper manufacturing machines on these lines are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, including the world class International Falls-1 machine. One of these lines is co-led by an Assistant Paper Machine Superintendent whose job it is to ensure that production line manufacturing processes and staffing operate at optimal levels.

The Assistant Paper Machine Superintendent is responsible for the overall operation of paper machine manufacturing, including the multi-million dollar I-1 paper machine. Such responsibility includes oversight of the overall performance of the operation in terms of safety, costs, production, and manning. This position oversees stock preparation, equipment maintenance, safety, training, and management of the crews, and optimization of productivity.

This position supervises hourly staff papermakers and engineers. This position is responsible for resolving safety issues and concerns, and is actively involved with incident investigations. The position is responsible for assuring that internal and external customer needs and specifications are met, and has set productivity goals and expectations. The position coordinates maintenance activities on departmental equipment and long-term planning of asset enhancements and maintenance by defining and scoping capital requirement.

The Assistant Paper Machine Superintendent's duties shall include:
  • Safety- Management of all safety policies within the department which include the adherence to and enforcement of mill safety rules, procedures, personal protective equipment and OSHA compliance. It shall be his responsibility to create a safe work environment for his team of employees.
  • Quality- Ensure expectations are carried out for quality standards and provide necessary resources to maintain stable and capable quality performance.
  • Productivity - Monitor production performance daily. Make system changes to meet needs of customers and financial results. Plan and schedule resources for department needs. Follow-up on all equipment and resource issues.
  • Product Development - Work closely with Product Managers to improve the overall grade mix of the paper machine to meet financial results. Assist in developing and setting standards for expectations around trial planning and execution. Remove barriers and acquire necessary resources to successful commercialize new products.
  • Budget - Assist development and control operating budget and expenses for the department. Approve department requisitions and purchases.
  • Environmental - Assist in developing and setting expectations around environmental compliance of the operation.
  • Planning - Assist in developing long range planning and development for system/process improvement. Interface with Capital Engineering Superintendent to develop capital plans for the department. Interface with Maintenance Superintendent with modification planning. Research new products and technology. Develop plans to serve customers in an effective manner.
  • Communication - Improve communications within the department and between departments. Develop and communicate common goals for the department and communicate problems and action plans developed to correct problems.
  • Administrative - Develop employees through IDP planning, hold employees accountable and where necessary use performance plans to enhance poor performance.
  • Housekeeping - Develop and set standards and expectations around housekeeping in the department. It shall be his responsibility to monitor, follow-up, and report performance.

Minimum requirements:

The minimum requirements for the Assistant Paper Machine Superintendent position are a bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent, in Engineering or Pulp and Paper Science. The position also requires six years of progressive experience in a paper mill.
