Job Description

Since 1851, The New York Times' mission has been seeking the truth and helping people understand the world. Whether it's bringing new truths to light through reporting, finding the perfect side dish to pair with dinner, or challenging yourself with the Sunday crossword, our mobile apps bring this mission right to our subscribers' hands. Our Android apps are progressive - just a few months ago, we were mentioned at Google I/O for being an early adopter of Jetpack Compose in production. Our teams advocate for the best approach to building apps, and look to the future by participating in Early Access Programs.

Our remote-friendly mobile teams sit at the intersection of our mission. We're looking for Android Engineers of all levels to help us take our apps to the next level. Some of the opportunities include:
  • Build engaging features to improve the reader experience in our flagship News app
  • Maximize subscriber value within our Growth Platform
  • Apply the latest trends in native and hybrid development to create engaging experiences on our Games team
  • Help users discover and cook the world's best recipes on the Cooking team
  • Create the next generation of audio storytelling on our new Audio team
  • Build the foundational technologies that empower all mobile teams by joining the App Platforms team

You'll be an ideal candidate if you:
  • Have professional experience building sophisticated app experiences using Kotlin, Java, and related technologies
  • Understand Android design patterns, memory management and multi-threading
  • Are excited to use the latest platform technologies like Jetpack Compose, Coroutines, Dagger, and Room.
  • Will help promote engineering excellence in mobile development
  • Embrace challenges, learn from mistakes, and are always looking to the future of mobile development
  • Are excited about The New York Times, and share our mission to help people understand the world

This role will require limited on-call hours.

Benefits and Perks:
  • Support our original, independent, and deeply reported journalism.
  • We embrace remote work and do our best to thoughtfully support colleagues wherever they can be happiest.
  • We provide great health, dental, vision and life insurance for employees and their families
  • We support responsible retirement planning with a generous 401(k) company match.
  • We offer great parental leave with five months off.
  • We are committed to career development and ongoing learning, and provide employees $8,000 annually for tuition reimbursement.
  • Hack on original ideas during Maker Week.
  • We have frequent panel discussions and talks by a wide variety of newsmakers and industry leaders.
  • Join a community committed to the richness of diversity, experiences and talents in the world we cover, supported by a variety of employee resource groups.

The New York Times is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce, one that reflects the varied global community we serve. Our journalism and the products we build in the service of that journalism greatly benefit from a range of perspectives, which can only come from diversity of all types, across our ranks, at all levels of the organization. Achieving true diversity and inclusion is the right thing to do. It is also the smart thing for our business. So we strongly encourage women, veterans, people with disabilities, people of color and gender nonconforming candidates to apply.
